MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of South Alabama men’s and women’s track and field teams combined to capture six individual wins on Saturday at the MTSU Invitational hosted inside the Blue Raiders’ Murphy Center.
Anton Graphenreed won the men’s 200-meter dash, earning the course tape in 21.51. He also edged his own fourth-place all-time USA 55-meter dash record on a personal-best 6.37 second mark.
Bobbie Williamson topped the women’s shot put on a mark of 13.12m (43-00.50) and recorded a 16.15m (53-00) distance in the weight throw to finish third and improve her all-time South Alabama runner-up measure behind Latifah Johnson, who won the weight throw Saturday on a 16.64m (54-07.25) mark.
Johnson finished behind Williamson in the shot put (12.85m/42-02.00) and ahead of Johnnie Borries, who tossed a 12.33m (40-05.50), good enough for fourth. Borries also took sixth in the women’s long jump on a personal-best leap of 5.35m (17-06.75) and tied for seventh in the high jump (1.55m/5-01), an event that saw four Lady Jags claim top-10 spots.
Lindsay Schwartz led the pack on a 1.61m (5-03.25) measure for third, Jasmine Ferguson registered the same mark as Borries, but did so on fewer misses at height. Leah Hixon took ninth (1.50m/4-11) to add to a third-place women’s long jump effort on a personal-best 5.50m (18-00.50).
Erikka Williams finished behind Hixon at fifth (5.44m/17-10.25) in the long jump as well.
Joey Torres led a 1-3-4-5-6 Jaguar weight throw performance on a 17.61m (57-09.50). Steven Nobles followed at 17.16m (56-03.75), ahead of Adam Patterson (16.61m/54-06.00), Jeff Long (15.56m/51-00.75) and Jarrod Kedzior (12.75m/41-10).
Patterson took third in the men’s shot put on a 14.57m (47-09.75) to lead Long (4
th, 13.95m/45-09.25) and Kedzior (5
th, 13.92m/45-08).
Briana Aiken cleared 3.39m (11-01.50) to win the women’s pole vault. In the men’s division, Ashton Krause won on a mark of 4.42m (14-06). William Henley took second, ahead of third-place Mikel Magnusson on fewer misses at 4.27m (14-00). Taylor Krause finished fourth (4.12m/13-06.25).
Ashton, the elder Krause brother, also took third in the men’s high jump (1.91m/6-03.25), edging Connor Smith on fewer misses at 1.91m (6-03.25). Smith also ran an 8.34 in the men’s 55-meter hurdles to finish second.
Melissa McCluskey finished runner-up in the women’s 400 meters, completing the race in 1:00.21. Mary Finn and Shannen Weyer finished fifth and eighth in the women’s mile run, recording respective times of 5:12.38 and 5:16.11.
Kendra Lowe clocked a career-best 2:21.50 in the women’s 800 meters, two-tenths of a second ahead of Finn, who subsequently took ninth. Alex Shields and Justin Housley recorded similar finishes in the men’s race, sprinting through in times of 1:58.88 and 1:59.06, respectively.
Freshman Kristin Parry claimed third in the women’s 3,000 meters (11:23.70) and Ronny Wilson took sixth in the men’s race (8:54.54).
Three Jaguar four-man teams rounded out top-five finishes in the men’s 4x400-meter relay on Saturday. The USA ‘A’ team of Tyler Agee, Spencer Anderson, Tevin Barnett and Daniels Duhe took second in 3:29.79, and the ‘C’ squad (Daniel Cooper, Housley, Shields, Magnusson) finished almost 15 seconds ahead of the ‘B’ unit (Derek Westbrook, Wilson, Robert Mann, T. Krause) at 3:40.99 to finish fourth, leaving ‘B’ in fifth.
In the women’s division, USA’s ‘A’ team, comprised of Hixon, McCluskey, Williams and Erika Saxton, took fifth in 4:14.63, one spot ahead of the USA ‘B’ foursome of Lowe, Weyer, Finn and Erica Arenas.
On tap for the Jaguars is the Vulcan Invitational to be contested on Feb. 10-11. The meet will be USA’s fourth visit in five competitions to the Magic City, where the Jags spent a great deal of time breaking school records at the Birmingham Ice Breaker, UAB Blazer Invite and Birmingham Invitational.
