EARLY WESTERN KENTUCKY GOALS BURY JAGS IN BOWLING GREEN

USA junior midfielder Clarissa Hernandez

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.
– The University of South Alabama women’s soccer team went down two goals in the first 24 minutes of first half action in Bowling Green on Friday and could not recover, with the scoreline carrying through 90 minutes and the Lady Hilltoppers firing 21 shots total on the USA defense.

“We didn’t come out with enough energy, and early goals put us behind tonight,” said USA head coach Mike Varga. “We have to be more consistent opening games. Western Kentucky played well against us tonight.”

WKU’s Sydney Sisler scored her second goal of the season on a direct kick from 18 yards out 33 seconds into the game. Amanda Buechel buried her ninth goal of the year off a Kelsey Burnette cross midway through the half to double the scoreline.

Western Kentucky (10-4-1, 5-1-1 SBC) outshot USA (7-7-2, 2-3-1 SBC) 21-6 in the match and dominated corner kicks, 4-1. USA keeper Melissa Drish made eight saves on the night. USA’s Clarissa Hernandez led USA offensively, putting her two shots on frame.

South Alabama will face league-leader Middle Tennessee on Sunday in Murfreesboro. Kickoff for Sunday’s match is slated for 1 p.m. Results will be posted to the Jaguar athletics webpage immediately following the match.
