TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The University of South Alabama’s men’s tennis team gained a split Saturday, losing to No. 44 Florida State but blanking Furman.
The Jaguars were swept 4-0 against FSU, but came out victorious 7-0 over Furman.
At No. 2 doubles, senior
Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) and freshman
Daniel Leitner (Niederfischbach, Germany) fell 8-1 to
Dominic Cotrone and
Anderson Reed of FSU, while seniors
Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) and
Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) lost at No. 3 to
Benjamin Lock and
Andres Bucaro 8-5 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, South Alabama lost three matches to FSU.
Bernard fell 6-1, 6-1 to Davis at No. 2, while Leitner also fell 6-1, 6-1 to
Cristian Gonzalez Mendez in the No. 4 flight. Bartsch lost 6-2, 6-3 to Bucaro at No. 3.
The Jaguars rebounded in the nightcap to win all six singles matches in straight sets.
Leitner gave the Jags a 2-0 lead after defeating
Jacob Behal 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 and junior
Cody Hall (Albuquerque, N.M) added another point with a 6-1, 6-2 win over
Tyler Droll in the No. 4 flight.
Bernard clinched it at No. 2 singles with a win over
Joel Cook 7-6 (3), 6-1.
South Alabama also got wins from Bocaert, who outlasted
Andrew Mellow 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1, and Kruger, who topped
Nate Collins in the No. 5 flight 6-0, 7-6 (1).
Freshman
Blake Gregor (Griffith, New South Wales, Australia) made it a clean sweep when he defeated
Sven Ivankovic 7-5, 6-4.
South Alabama easily took the doubles point, losing just three games at the top two flights.
Bartsch and Bocaert won 8-2 over Behal and Mellow at No. 1, while Hall and Kuehne teamed up to take down Collins and Cook 8-1.
Bernard and Leitner also claimed a victory over
Watson George and Droll 8-7.
The Jaguars open their home schedule Feb. 1 when they take on Nicholls State.
