TEN-RUN INNING LIFTS MSU OVER JAG BASEBALL

Taylor White recorded a career-high five hits in the Jaguars' 15-9 loss to Mississippi State Tuesday at Stanky Field.

MOBILE, Ala. – Mississippi State scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a 15-9 win over University of South Alabama baseball Tuesday night at Stanky Field.

The Bulldogs sent 14 batters to the plate in the seventh, and recorded six hits in the frame led by Brent Brownlee who tripled, doubled and drove in four runs in the inning. Two Jaguar errors allowed five unearned runs to cross the plate in the inning.

South Alabama (22-22) held a 9-5 lead heading into the top of the seventh after scoring four runs in both the third and sixth innings.

The Jags took their first lead of the game, a 5-4 advantage, in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Jordan Patterson and Hunt Griffith, and a two-out, two-run single by Jeff DeBlieux after the inning was extended on a fielding error by MSU first baseman Ryan Collins.

Mississippi State (26-18) scored multiple runs in the second and third innings, and held a 4-1 lead before USA posted four runs in the bottom of the third.

MSU tied the game 5-5 with a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Brownlee that scored Nick Vickerson, who doubled to lead off the inning.

South Alabama answered in the bottom of the sixth with four runs to take a 9-5 lead on an RBI double by Jake Overstreet, two-run single by Patterson and a wild pitch from Darryl Norris that allowed Logan Kirkland to score from third.

Norris (2-0) earned the win in 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief, allowing just two hits while striking out three and issuing only one walk. Michael Carden (0-1) suffered the loss in one inning of relief, and allowed eight runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks, however, only three of Carden’s eight runs allowed were earned.

Taylor White recorded a career-high five hits to lead South Alabama at the plate, and finished 5-for-6 with a triple and one run scored. Patterson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and Overstreet went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

Brownlee went 3-for-3 with a triple, double, five RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Vickerson, Jaron Shepherd and Adam Frazier recorded three hits apiece for MSU, while Trey Johnson added two hits.

South Alabama will return to action Wednesday when it hosts Southern Miss (32-11) in a 6 p.m. contest at Stanky Field.

NOTES:  Overstreet recorded his 54th and 55th career doubles in the game and moved to second on the all-time list, passing former Jaguar Tyrone Dixon who now ranks third with 54 … White recorded a career-high five hits and recorded his first triple of the season … Tanner stole two bases, marking the second game this season he has stolen multiple bags.
