USA vs. Troy box score
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team defeated Troy for the second time this season to clinch seventh place at the Sun Belt Shootout Sunday.
“We are very confident in doubles,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “Winning the point allowed us to take the early lead.”
The Jags won the doubles point with victories in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Juniors Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) and Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) topped Jamie Eccleton and Anas Rouchdi 8-5 on the No. 2 court while senior Lucas Viel (Boussy-Saint-Antoine, France) and junior Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) downed Niklas Jonsson and Sami Ghorbel 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.
“Going into singles the guys were very tired,” said Brochu. “We played about seven hours of tennis on Saturday and didn’t get to bed until 1 a.m. because of our late finish.”
South Alabama clinched the match with wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles.
In the No. 2 spot Bernard beat Eccleton in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Kruger added a point on the No. 4 court with his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ghorbel.
In the No. 5 position Barsch downed Mario Rolemberg 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
“Some guys had to dig really deep to win this one,” said Brochu. “Hanno’s back was stiff from playing eight sets Saturday. He showed a lot of heart. I’m proud of him. He won some really big matches for us this week.”
USA will be back in action April 8-9 in Denver, Colo. when they go head-to-head with Denver and Central Florida.
