LAFAYETTE, La. – T.J. Geith tossed a complete game and allowed four runs while scattering 12 hits to lead the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to a 5-4 series-clinching win over the University of South Alabama baseball team Sunday afternoon at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Geith (4-3) struck out four and did not issue a walk in his longest career outing.
Cory McGinnis (1-1) suffered the loss for the Jaguars in 1 2/3 innings pitched, allowing one run on one hit with one walk. Jaguar starter Carlton Paris pitched 6 1/3 innings, and allowed four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts without factoring in the decision.
ULL (23-18, 10-8 SBC) scored three unanswered runs, one in each of their final three at-bats, to outlast the Jags. White singled with one out in the top of the ninth and represented the game-tying run, but Geith induced a double play off the bat of Nolan Earley to end the game.
Four Ragin’ Cajuns had multiple hits in the game, led by Lance Marvel who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Alex Fuselier, Greg Fontenot and Mike Petello had two hits each in the game for ULL.
Brad Hook went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a runs scored to lead South Alabama at the plate. Jeff DeBlieux tied a career high with three hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. White added two hits in the game, while Logan Kirkland added a hit and an RBI.
ULL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a double steal that brought home Fontenot, who singled earlier in the inning. The Ragin’ Cajuns doubled their lead later in the frame on Marvel’s RBI single to center field.
South Alabama cut the ULL lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth when DeBlieux singled to center field to score Jake Overstreet, who singled to lead off the inning. The Jaguars took a 3-2 lead when Hook doubled down the right field line, and doubled their lead to 4-2 on Kirkland’s sacrifice fly to center field to score Hook later in the inning.
ULL cut the USA lead to 4-3 lead on an RBI ground out by Jordan Bourque, after Chris Sinclair hit a one-out triple to right field. The Ragin’ Cajus tied the game 4-4 on an RBI single by Jordan Poirrier.
ULL scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a squeeze by Ryan Leonards that scored pinch-runner Brian Bowman.
South Alabama (22-18, 9-9 SBC) will return to action Tuesday., April 26, when it hosts New Orleans at 6 p.m. at Stanky Field.
