LAFAYETTE, La. – Michael Strentz delivered a two-out, walk-off single to right-center field in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to a 7-6 win over the University of South Alabama baseball team Saturday evening at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Mike Petello and Chris Sinclair led a two-out rally for the Ragin’ Cajuns with consecutive singles before Strentz singled on a 3-2 pitch from Jaguar right-hander Collin Blankenship.
ULL (22-18, 9-8 SBC) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but scored five runs in the frame to take a 6-5 lead. ULL started its rally with a leadoff single by Alex Fuselier and double by Greg Fontenot. Mike Petello singled home Fuselier to cut the USA lead to 5-2. The Ragin’ Cajuns loaded the bases on a walk by Lance Marvel, and proceeded to score two consecutive runs on a hit by pitch and base on balls to cut the Jaguar lead to 5-4. Matt Goulas then delivered a two-run single to give ULL a 6-5 lead.
Taylor White led off the top of the ninth inning with a walk, and reached second base safely when Jordan Poirrier’s throw to second on a grounder by Jake Overstreet sailed wide of shortstop Fontenot to allow White to reach safely. Nolan Earley followed with a double down the left field line that scored White to tie the game 6-6. USA then loaded the bases with no outs when Brent Tanner was intentionally walked, but ULL right-hander Joey Satriano induced a 3-2-3 ground ball double play off the bat of Jordan Patterson. He then followed with a strikeout of Trey Sorrells to end the Jaguar rally.
Petello went 4-for-6 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored to lead ULL at the plate. Fontenot went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Tanner went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead South Alabama at the plate. Patterson drove in two runs, while Earley, Overstreet and Brad Hook had two hits apiece.
Satriano (3-2) earned the win in three innings of shutout relief, and allowed one hit while striking out five and issuing just one walk.
Blankenship (2-2) suffered the loss in 2 1/3 innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. Jaguar starting pitcher Dustin Crenshaw pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed four runs while scattering eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk without factoring in the decision.
South Alabama (22-17, 9-8 SBC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Tanner delivered a two-out single to center field to score Logan Kirkland.
Tanner doubled the USA lead to 2-0 in the top of the third with an RBI single up the middle that scored Overstreet, and chased ULL starting pitcher Joe Zimmermann from the game. Patterson followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Earley and push the USA lead to 3-0.
Patterson increased the Jaguar lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI double to right field that scored Tanner, after he walked and stole second.
ULL cut the USA lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth when Fontenot led off the inning with a double and scored on Porrier’s single to center field.
The Jaguars increased their lead to 5-1 in the top of the seventh when White scored on a throwing error to home plate by ULL first baseman Tyler Frederick.
The loss snapped the Jaguars' winning streak at seven games. The series will conclude with the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. at M. L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
