JAG BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF UALR WITH 11-5 WIN

Carlton Paris tossed seven innings and allowed just three runs to lead South Alabama to a series sweep over UALR Sunday at Stanky Field.

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team captured its first Sun Belt Conference series sweep Sunday with an 11-5 win over UALR at Stanky Field.

The win marked the Jaguars’ fifth consecutive victory, a season-high winning streak, and moved them into a tie for fourth place in the Sun Belt with Louisiana-Lafayette.

South Alabama (20-16, 8-7 SBC) outscored the Trojans 8-1 in the game’s first three innings by posting a three-run first and a five-run third.

South Alabama chased UALR starter Calvin Drinnen out of the game in the top of the third inning, and loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Brad Hook then singled through the right side of the infield to score Brent Tanner and Jordan Patterson to give the Jags a 5-1 lead. Corey Bryan then drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the USA lead to 6-1. DeBlieux followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hook, giving South Alabama a 7-1 lead. The Jags tacked on their final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kirkland that scored Roam and increased the USA lead to 8-1.

UALR (15-20, 6-9 SBC) cut the Jaguar lead to five runs twice in the game with two runs in the sixth inning and one run in the eighth, but South Alabama answered each time with a single run in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the eighth inning.

Carlton Paris (2-3) earned the win for the Jags in seven innings, and allowed three runs while scattering nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Taylor White went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Patterson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run to lead the Jags at the plate. Trey Sorrells added a double, two RBI and a run scored. White extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Logan Kirkland extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Kirkland also drove in a run and scored three runs in the game.

Drinnen (3-4) suffered the loss in two innings pitched, after allowing five runs on three hits. He issued three walks and struck out one batter in the game.

Casey McCollum homered and drove in two runs, while Jake Rowell and Greg Garcia went 2-for-4 with one RBI each to lead the Trojans at the plate.

The win marked South Alabama’s seventh consecutive victory over UALR, and the Jaguars’ second consecutive series sweep over the Trojans.

The Jaguars loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs on a leadoff walk by Kirkland, single by White and walk by Tanner. Patterson then drove in the game’s first run with a single to right field. Sorrells followed with a double down the left field line to score White and Tanner and extend the Jaguar lead to 3-0.

UALR pushed their first run of the game across in the top of the third when Cameron Bentley tripled to right field and scored one batter later on Garcia’s groundout to second base.

The Trojans cut the USA lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Rowell and a sacrifice fly by McCollum, but South Alabama pushed its lead to 9-3 in the bottom-half of the sixth on Tanner’s sacrifice fly to center field that scored Kirkland.

UALR added a run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Jaguar lead to 9-4 on McCollum’s solo homer to left field. But USA answered in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run single by Patterson to push its lead to 11-4.

The Trojans added on run in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Myles Parma.

South Alabama recorded 11 hits in the game, marking its sixth consecutive game in which the Jaguars have recorded 10-plus hits. USA scored 41 runs on 47 hits in its three-game sweep of the Trojans, and recorded 17 extra-base hits in the series. The Jags batted .427 over the weekend, and drove in 39 runs in three games.
