Miller had held USM hitless to that point, however, Doleac extended the USM lead to 3-0 with a two-run double to right-center field later in the inning. Creel then doubled to left field to score two and push the Golden Eagle lead to 5-0.

USM (16-4) added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Rodriguez and two-run double to left-center field by Doleac to push their lead to 8-0.

USA answered to score three runs in the top of third inning to cut the USM lead to 8-3. Hook reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch. Patterson then delivered a two-out double off the center field wall to score Trey Sorrells and Jerry Roam.

Southern Miss added to its lead with a seven-run eighth inning aided by a two-run single by Brunty, an RBI doubles by Ellis and Bourgeois and RBI singles by Rodriguez, Doleac and Ellis.
