MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will play five games in the next six days, beginning Tuesday when the Jaguars host Jackson State at 6 p.m. at Stanky Field.
South Alabama (10-8, 1-2 SBC) defeated Jackson State 6-3 in 10 innings earlier this season in Jackson, Miss., and holds a 9-0 all-time series lead over the Tigers.
The Jaguars went 1-2 over the weekend against Troy to open Sun Belt Conference play. South Alabama enters Tuesday’s contest 6-4 at Stanky Field this season. USA enters the game with a .295 batting average and 5.23 team ERA.
Right-hander Carlton Paris (0-1) will make his second career start for the Jags. Paris enters the game with a 9.39 ERA in 7 2/3 innings pitched, while opponents are hitting .313 against him.
Jaguar catcher Brent Tanner leads the team in batting average (.357), slugging percentage (.514) and on-base percentage (.451), and is tied for the team lead in home runs (2) and walks (10). Tanner led USA with a .417 batting average in the Troy series, while also driving in five runs.
JSU enters Tuesday’s contest with a 9-9 overall record after taking two of three games at Florida A&M over the weekend.
The Tigers enter Tuesday’s contest with a .275 team batting average, led by third baseman Frank Solis who leads JSU with a .344 average. Desmond Russell leads the Tigers in hits (24) and doubles (6), while Charles Epperson leads the team in RBI (12), and is tied for the team lead in home runs with two.
JSU pitchers carry a 3.73 ERA into Tuesday’s game. Terrance Washingtonn leads the team in wins (3), while Quintavious Drains leads Jackson State in strikeouts (42). Opponents are hitting just .258 against the Tigers this season.
South Alabama’s Wednesday contest at Southern Miss (15-3) will mark the 80th meeting between the schools. USA holds a 52-27 all-time series lead heading into the game.
USM will travel to Monroe, La., for a matchup with Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday prior to hosting the Jaguars Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss. The game was rescheduled after being postponed on the original date of March 8.
The Golden Eagles went 3-0 over the weekend at the Cougar Invitational in Charleston, S.C. USM defeated No. 20 College of Charleston, Rhode Island and Connecticut in the tournament to extend their season-best win streak to seven games.
USM enters the week batting .299 as a team, while the pitching staff boasts a 2.96 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .231 against them.
Tyler Koelling leads the Golden Eagles in batting average (.388) and hits (31), while B.A. Vollmuth leads the team in home runs (7), RBI (23), total bases (49), slugging percentage (.710) and walks (13).
