USA MEN'S TENNIS EDGED BY ODU 4-3

USA vs. ODU box score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– Old Dominion's Tobias Fanselow's three-set win over the University of South Alabama’s Romain Bocaert (Lille, France) secured the Monarchs' 4-3 victory over the Jaguars in men’s tennis action Tuesday afternoon.

"It's the second year in a row we’ve lost to ODU 4-3,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “It is hard to swallow. It was almost a replay of last year. We took the early lead by winning the doubles point, but they came from behind to steal the victory. We aren’t playing bad, but we are missing the passion and character needed to win the big matches. We will take a few days off and go back to work on Monday."

ODU improved its record to 13-3 while USA fell to 4-5 after Tuesday’s match.

The Jaguar tandem of Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) and Alexandre Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) picked up the first win of the day with their 8-3 victory over the Monarchs’ Tobias Fanselow and Krzysztof Muzalewski at No. 1 doubles. Old Dominion won on the No. 3 court leaving the doubles point up for grabs.

USA juniors Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) and Christian Kuehne (Morbach, Germany) clinched the point for the Jags with their 8-6 win over Benjamin Chomette and Clay Cypert in the No. 2 flight.

In singles action the Monarchs took the first three points on the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3 courts to give them the 3-1 lead.

Bernard struck back with his straight-sets win over Chomette 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles followed by Kruger’s 6-1, 7-5 victory over Fahoum Fahoumin the No. 5 spot.

With the match tied at 3-3 the decision came down to the No. 1 court. Fanselow defeated Bocaert 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 clinching the match for ODU.

Next up for the Jags is the ITF Futures Tournament in Mobile, Ala. on March 26.
