HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team picked up 15 singles wins and five doubles wins this weekend at the Southern Miss Invitational.
"We knew going in this tournament that we were the No.1 seed and we should be able to win many matches," said USA head coach Nick Brochu. "Our objective this weekend was to play extremely hard from the first point to the last. Out of a total of 24 matches over two days, we only lost four. We were a very solid team from top to bottom which will be very important in the spring."
The Jags posted eight singles wins on the first day of the tournament against opponents from William Carey and Tulane and three doubles victories against duos from Lamar University.
USA’s Lucas Viel, Romain Bocaert, Hanno Bartsch, Dauw Kruger and Parker Allen downed their William Carey counterparts in straight sets.
Bocaert, Viel, Bartsch and Kruger won their second matches of the day against opponents from Tulane leaving them undefeated in singles action on day one of the tournament.
In doubles action every Jaguar pair came out on top. Viel and Bocaert teamed up to beat Lamar’s Denis Ermilov and Rob Lee 8-2. Kruger and Bartsch were victorious over Carlos Valdenebro and Diego Snyder of Lamar 8-4. The South Alabama tandem of Seur and Allen picked up an 8-6 win over Lamar’s Devin Harley and Southern Miss’s Paulo Alvarado.
The Jaguars continued their winning ways on day two of the tournament, picking up six additional singles wins against players from Lamar and two more doubles victories over opponents from William Carey.
Viel topped Lee 6-2, 6-3, Bocaert downed Valdenebro 6-3, 6-3, Bartsch defeated Ermilov 6-3, 6-3, Kruger beat Marton Horvath 6-4, 6-4, Seur was victorious over Dusan Sarkovic 6-2, 6-2 and Allen picked up a win over Diego Snyder 7-5, 3-6, (10-8).
In doubles play, Bocaert and Viel tallied an 8-6 mark to beat William Carey’s Claassen and Toni Gauta. Bartsch and Kruger did not drop a game to Dominik Kardell and Steven Georgian. Seur and Allen’s 8-6 loss to Pedro Moreno and Duffy Loel was the Jags only doubles loss of the day.
The Jaguars will be back in action Oct. 2-8 at the ITA/D’Novo Men’s All American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
