SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PLAYER ANTHONY MOSTELLA PASSES AWAY

MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama football player Anthony Mostella passed away in a one-vehicle accident Sunday in St. Clair County.

Mostella, 22, was a resident of Oneonta, Ala.  He was set to enter his final season of eligibility in the fall.

"We are deeply saddened by this event.  Anthony has been and will be regarded as an inspirational leader, role model and stellar citizen," said USA Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his teammates and his friends."

Mostella was voted a team captain at the conclusion of the Jags' inaugural season last fall.  He rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns, and was also credited with seven tackles on special teams coverage units.  He participated in the program's inaugural spring practice after transferring from Birmingham-Southern - where he played one year for Jaguar head coach Joey Jones - and sitting out the 2008 football season.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Anthony's family right now," added Jones, who is out of the country on a previously scheduled trip.  "I've been fortunate to have worked with Anthony at two schools, he was the epitome of a true student-athlete and a tremendous role model to his peers.  His character and leadership skills will always be an example for everyone in our program to follow."

Funeral arrangements for Mostella are not available at this time.  All USA football players will be unavailable for interviews.
