MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama baseball right-hander
D.D. Hanks pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Jaguars to an 8-4 win over Louisiana-Monroe Friday night at Stanky Field.
Hanks (8-2) earned the win in 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six without issuing a walk. The win marked his fourth in Sun Belt Conference games.
Adam Heisler went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI to lead the Jags at the plate. Taylor White went 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and two runs scored. Brent Tanner, Tyler Vick, Brandon Brown and Clint Reynolds added a hit and one RBI each.
ULM right-hander Drew Granier (3-4) took the loss in seven innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Warhawk shortstop Boomer Blanchard went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored to lead ULM at the plate. Nick Wade and Judd Edwards added two hits each for Louisiana-Monroe.
USA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Sean Laird reached on a walk, and later scored on Brown's sacrifice fly to center field. The Jags added their second run of the inning on a fielding error by ULM shortstop Boomer Blanchard that allowed White to score from second base.
The Jags extended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs on five hits. White tripled to right-center field to score Laird, who singled to lead off the inning. Vick followed with a double to right-center to score White and push the USA lead to 4-0. Reynolds then doubled to left-center field to score Vick, and Heisler followed with an RBI double to left field to score Reynolds.
ULM (13-21, 3-10 SBC) cut the USA lead to 6-1 in the top of the sixth inning on Wade's RBI double to right-center field that scored Blanchard, who doubled earlier in the inning.
The Jags added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase their lead to 7-1. Heisler doubled down the left field line to score Reynolds, after he reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
The Warhawks cut the Jaguar lead to 7-3 in the top of the seventh inning on a two-run single by Blanchard that scored Josh Gill and Shane Ardoin, who doubled and singled, respectively, earlier in the inning.
Tanner doubled the USA lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when he delivered a solo home run to center field, his sixth homer of the season, to give the Jags an 8-3 lead.
ULM scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth inning when Edwards scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Gill.
Jaguar reliever Kyle Dees pitched 2.1 innings in relief, including a scoreless ninth inning, and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out one.
USA (25-14, 12-4 SBC) returns to action Saturday against ULM at 3 p.m. at Stanky Field, which will be televised on CSS.
