USA HOMERS FOUR TIMES TO KNOCK OFF NSU

MOBILE, Ala. - Four different University of South Alabama hitters homered to help right-hander Chad Reeves earn his first career victory in the Jaguars 13-7 win over Nicholls State Tuesday night at Stanky Field.

Reeves (1-0) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four and issuing one walk. Reeves, along with USA relievers Phillip Byrd, Jake LeBlanc and Brad Hook, held the Colonels scoreless for five consecutive innings.

Sean Laird went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Jags at the plate. Brent Tanner went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, Tyler Vick went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs, and Jake Overstreet added a home run, one RBI and three runs scored. Adam Heisler went 2-for-5 with three RBI to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

NSU left-hander Ryan Cooper (2-4) took the loss in four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Colonel third baseman Beau Faulk went 3-for-5 with a home run, double and four RBI to lead the Colonels at the plate. NSU designated hitter Adam Miley went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.

Nicholls State (15-17) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on when Miley homered  to center field, and doubled its lead in the top of the second inning when Chase Jaramillo scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a walk to lead off the inning.

USA took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second innning with four runs on four hits. Laird led off the inning with a single, and later scored on a fielding error by NSU first baseman Blake Bergeron. Tanner later singled in to score Vick, who reached base on a single earlier in the inning. Tanner and Taylor White scored later in the frame on a two-run single by Heisler.

NSU tied the game 4-4 in the top of the third inning when Faulk delivered a two-run home run to center field.

The Jags answered in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead on Overstreet's  solo home run to left-center field. Tanner extended the USA lead to 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to right-center field.

Vick increased the Jaguar lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run to left field that scored Overstreet, who reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Laird, who singled ahead of Vick.

USA added four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to extend its lead to 13-4. Laird hit a three-run home run over the left field wall that plated Zach Grichor and Overstreet.  Heisler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Brandon Brown, who doubled earlier in the inning.

Nicholls State added three runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run single by Faulk, and an RBI single by Miley.

USA (24-13) returns to action Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Mississippi State.

NOTES:  Heisler extended his hitting streak to 10 games ...  Hook recorded his fifth consecutive scoreless inning, and has not allowed a run in five innings pitched this season ... The Jags' four home runs set a new season high, bettering their three-home run effort at Middle Tennessee March 27 ... USA improved to 29-11 over Nicholls State, and 19-9 all-time against the Colonels at Stanky Field.
