MOBILE, Ala. --- University of South Alabama junior
Tim Williams (Pontiac, Mich.) and freshman
Martino Brock (Memphis, Tenn.) each recorded double-doubles to lead the Jaguars to a come-from-behind 67-65 win over Louisiana at Lafayette Saturday night at the Mitchell Center.
The Jaguars win for the third time in four games to move to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin’ Cajuns fall to 11-14 and 8-6.
“To win close games, you’ve got to have guys that will make plays,” said USA head coach
Ronnie Arrow. “Tim made some big jump shots and made his free throws, and Martino had a big rebound and a put-back. We took care of the ball for the most part and we got stops.”
Williams scored 23 points with 12 rebounds (tying his career high) while Brock tallied 19 and a personal-best 13 boards. They are the first USA teammates to tally double-doubles in the same game this season.
ULL’s
Tyren Johnson paced all players with 30 points, three blocks and four steals, while
Chris Gradnigo had 19 points and eight rebounds.
Momentum swung back and forth in the second half. Down 10 at the break, the Jags got back-to-back 3s from Brock and junior
Gary Redus II (Decatur, Ala.) but the Ragin’ Cajuns scored the next five. South Alabama answered with a 9-2 rally, capped off with a ‘3’ from sophomore
Allyn Cooks (Bryan, Texas), but Johnson responded with seven consecutive points, all on his own.
Brock and Williams teamed up for a 7-0 spurt, before Johnson converted a 3-point play. Williams came back on the next possession to hit a trifecta to pull the Jaguars to 52-50 with 7:22 remaining.
Cooks gave South Alabama the lead (55-54) for the first time since the opening minutes of the game on a driving lay-up high off the glass and finished the 8-0 run with a 3-pointer.
Johnson scored the Cajuns’ next four points to tie the game again at 58-58. After four USA free throws broke the tie, Johnson recorded five of ULL’s next seven, all consecutive, to go on top 65-62.
Williams hit two more at the line and on the Jags’ final offensive possession, Brock gathered a Redus 3-point miss from the corner and laid it in with 23 seconds left to lead 66-65.
Randell Daigle had two opportunities to take the lead, including a 25-footer just before time expired, but missed both.
South Alabama tied its season high with nine 3-pointers and went 7-for-11 from beyond the arc after halftime.
South Alabama makes its final regular-season road trip next week, starting with Western Kentucky Thursday at 7 p.m.
