SMITH'S GOLDEN GOAL SINKS DOLPHINS

MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama soccer forward Brandi Smith netted the game-winning goal with 1:03 left in the first overtime to lift the Jags over Jacksonville 1-0 Friday night at "The Cage."

Smith took a pass from the middle of the field from Liz Clark, and shot up the left side of the box on a breakaway to score her second goal of the season.

"I thought it was an evenly-contested match," USA head coach Mike Varga said. "Jacksonville organizes very well in the back. Hopefully, it helps our confidence getting the win tonight. I don't think our confidence was hurt, even with the early part of the schedule. But we're seeing what we still need to work on, and trying to figure it out on the fly. Hopefully, we'll get better every day."

Jaguar goalkeeper Katie Berry earned her second career shutout, and recorded nine saves in the match.

USA (2-4-0) ended a four-game losing streak with the win, and earned its first home win of the season. The Jags return to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. contest against Stetson at "The Cage."
