LAFAYETTE, La. -Â South Alabama blanks Louisiana in game two of the regular season series finale, 10-0 in only seven innings.
Jaxon Shineflew left nothing for the Ragin' Cajuns, earning his first nine outs by strikeout. Shineflew retired eight in a row from the first inning through the third. After allowing two hits in the first inning, he only allowed a walk in the fourth then a hit in the sixth. Shineflew finished with 6.0 innings, three hits allowed, and 10 strikeouts. The lights-out pitching fueled the oppressive offense today.Â
The Jaguars opened up the game stringing together success through multiple outcomes. After Brennan Holt walked and stole second, Louisiana elected to intentionally walk Micah Morgan. JG Bell then used his at bat to single into the outfield to score Holt.Â
The next few innings were quiet, with the only other score being a leadoff home run by Joseph Sullivan in the fourth. The fifth inning kicked off hot when Will Turner and Holt both walked to start the inning. Back-to-back hits by Lucas Ismaili and Morgan doubled the score at 4-0, but the bases were loaded after Bell reached on a sacrifice bunt. Sullivan came back up to the plate and sent all four of them home for the Jaguar's first grand slam of the season.
South scored two more runs in the seventh inning when Rett Johnson landed a two-RBI single into center field.
Zach Willingham came in relief for Shineflew in the seventh inning, drawing a fly out and then striking out the final two batters for the Jags' fourth three-up, three-down inning of the game.Â
Winning Pitcher:Â Jaxon Shineflew (3-0)
Losing Pitcher:Â Jack Martinez (4-3)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
On the guys responding to the game one loss:Â They weren't happy. We were hungry yesterday, but, season on the line, our guys are at their best. Shineflew, you know, momentum is that game's starting pitcher, so our guy gave us momentum. There's no momentum before you start a game, that's what that pitcher does, and Jackson Shineflew was the best form of momentum for us today. So he was fantastic. I think we got six out of our seven leadoff outs, between him and Willingham and, you know, it's one of those games where we only got seven hits and 10 runs. We got some guys on, we drew some walks against some pretty good arms, and then we ran into, you know, Sully with the big blast. We got some guys on, got some big hits, and threw up some crooked numbers and our guys did a really good job.
On Sullivan being an offensive spark: Well, he's a threat. He's a threat, and that's the thing. You saw,he can miss-hit a ball and hit it out. There isn't a field that can hold them. Rett Johnson did a marvelous job in his absence, but Sully is a threat. He's somebody you got to circle. If you make a mistake, you know, he's going to hit it into the trees, which you've seen a couple of times-yesterday and today. He's got big time power, and it's just that threat; even if he doesn't do it. It's just that you keep the other team's defense on pins and needles, that presence in the box. And we missed that, you know, you look at the best teams in the country, they have guys that have that presence in the box, whether they're home run threats or just hit for average threats and Sully's one of our threats, and it's good to have him back.
