LAFAYETTE, La. - South Alabama drops the opening game of the series at Louisiana, 5-6.
Lucas Ismaili gave the Jags the early lead with a solo homer in the opening frame, but the Jags struggled to maintain momentum later into the game.
The Ragin' Cajuns leveled things in the third with an RBI single, then scored two more in the fourth of three doubles in a row.
The Jaguars were not done yet, with a leadoff walk by Brennan Holt, then a single by Ismaili in the sixth. Micah Morgan then crushed a go-ahead home run out of right field to make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth Louisiana took to their own, scoring one with an RBI single to the outfield, then got another on with an intentional walk. Both came around to score on another screamer into the outfield before play was stopped due to weather with a 4-6 score.
The game was postponed until Friday afternoon where Danny Diaz worked out a jam to keep the Ragin' Cajun offense quiet.
The top of the seventh saw action for the Jags, with Rett Johnson reaching on a dropped third strike, then advancing on two sacrifice bunts, the first by Duncan Mathews who still reached base. An infield groundout sent Johnson home to cut the lead in half. South again had a runner on third in the ninth, but with two outs, a flyout left him stranded and the Ragin' Cajuns with the win.
