SAN MARCOS, Tex. - South Alabama, despite a late-inning surge, was unable to complete the comeback as Texas State took game one of the weekend series, 6-3.
The Jaguars struggled to find scoring opportunities all game, going 1-9 with runners in scoring position.
Cam Hill worked the first 3.1 innings, allowing four hits that scored two runs before giving way to
Eric Lin. Lin's first 2.2 innings were stellar, only giving up one hit going into the seventh. The first two Bobcat batters were able to reach base in the seventh off of a bunt single, then a ball lost in the lights that fell fair, setting up Texas State well for their four-run inning that propped up the score to 6-0.
South finally got a leadoff batter on when
Will Turner knocked a single up the middle, setting up the rest of the order to make some noise. A
Lucas Ismaili single scored Turner, and
Micah Morgan moved both Ismaili and himself into scoring position with a double down the right field line. A wild pitch advanced both, and a sacrifice fly scored Morgan before the third out.
Despite a scoreless frame in the return to the mound by
Austin Mills, USA was unable to work anything besides a
Brennan Holt double out of the final three outs.
Winning Pitcher: Austin Eaton (3-3)
Save: Jonathan Martinez (1)
Losing Pitcher: Cam Hill (3-3)

On what the difference in the game was tonight: The difference was, they got their leadoff guy on four out of their eight innings on offense and they scored in three of those innings. We didn't, we had a hard time doing that. They did a good job pitching. We didn't get our leadoff guy on so we were playing from behind, and couldn't really do a whole lot. They got some big hits with runners on, we were missing a big hit tonight with runners on, that's the big deal. We got nine hits. We got as many as they did, they just maximized their hits better than we did. To be honest with you. They did a nice job pitching tonight. They out-played us tonight. They pitched better than us tonight. They got more timely hits than us tonight. There's a lot of series left and we'll be ready to go tomorrow.
