South Takes first loss of the Season in Game Two Against JSU

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama fell behind Jacksonville State early and was unable to rally in the Jaguars' first loss of the season, 9-3.

The Jags gave up three runs in the opening frame, and while Will Turner responded with a resounding solo shot out of right field, South never worked out much more to threaten the Gamecocks' lead. South's most productive hitter on the day was Duncan Mathews, who went 2-4 with one run and one RBI.

The USA pitching staff struggled to hold back the JSU bats, allowing 19 batters on base and allowed three home runs, with only eight strikeouts.

Winning Pitcher: Colin Woodham (1-1)
Losing Pitcher: Cade Carlson (0-1)

QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi:

Thoughts on the game: I told the guys we got out competed today. They wanted to win worse than we did. We got out hit, out competed basically on the field, in the box, everywhere, didn't deserve to win. We won't win many games playing like that.

On batting today: We pulled off all game long. Again, their guys competed in the box better and got the hit and our guys didn't. Our guys were pulling off baseballs, trying to get it up into the wind and we have nothing to show for it. So bad approach at the plate today and that's on me. We just… guys who got up didn't get it done. It's baseball but we were lackadaisical all over the field today, which is what bothers me so much. It wasn't like they're in there competing to their hardest. They were just up there getting they're going through their at bat. That's what I saw. And you can write that down. I mean, we walked eight, we hit two, and we balked twice, so 10 free passes. You're not going to beat anyone like that. The game starts and stops on the mountain, and then there wasn't anything else done around them to help them. So you take one on the chin, you move on.
