South Alabama Track and Field Gears up for Sun Belt Indoor Championships

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama Track and Field program will travel to the Birmingham Crossplex for the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships on Monday, Feb.19, and Tuesday, Feb. 20. 

The meet will begin with the pentathlon events at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, and the track events start with the women's mile run at 3:05 p.m. On Tuesday, the heptathlon events will conclude, beginning at 10:00 a.m. The awards presentations are scheduled to take place at 5:00 p.m.

South Alabama finished in the top five in the men's and women's competitions at last year's championships. The men's team secured third place with 120.5 points, while the women placed fourth, scoring 58 points. The Jags claimed six total first-place finishes at the Championships, four in field events, and two in track events. Colette Uys, Sebastian Reyneke, and Bodine Degli-Umberti return this season to defend their titles.

Notes

  • South Alabama has broken two school records this indoor season. 
  • Sebastian Loschner has broken the indoor school record in the shot put at three different meets this season. Most recently, he logged a throw of 17.66 meters (57 feet 11 ¼ inches) to take first place in the event.
  • Degli-Umberti demolished the indoor school record in the weight throw at Minnesota's Jack Johnson Classic with a throw of 20.21 meters (66 feet 3 ¾ inches). This mark smashed the previous record of 19.44 meters (63 feet 9 ½ inches). She would also go on to earn a new season-best in the shot put with a mark of 15.08 meters (49 feet 5 ¾ inches) to take second place in the competition.
  • Sebastian Reyneke dominated the men's heptathlon early this season at the Samford Invitational, finishing with 5509 total points, winning four events, and setting three new personal records to take first place in the competition. Reyneke started the action by winning the long jump with a personal record jump of 7.05 meters. He would take the top spot in the shot put with a PR hurl of 15.01 meters and the high jump with a leap of 2.04 meters. Sebastian closed out the heptathlon with a personal best pole vault of 4.70 meters to secure the win.  
  • Kyle Rademeyer continued his superior ways in the pole vault this indoor season. Rademeyer set a new Samford Invitational record earlier this year, clearing a height of 5.55 meters (18 feet 2 ½ inches) to take first place. This finish ranks ninth in the NCAA DI College Indoor Rankings.  
  • Latiana Acker had a blazing performance in the 60 meters at the South Alabama Invitational, running to a time of 7.59 to take third place in the competition and tie the indoor school record in the event.
  • At Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge, Sacha Perrier blazed to a time of 14:09.00 in the men's 5000 meters to secure fourth place in the competition. This finish also moved Perrier up to fourth all-time in the indoor record books in the event. 
  • Teagan Flanagan also ran a blistering race in the men's 5000 meters at Vanderbilt. Flanagan clocked a time of 14:09.23 to finish right behind Perrier in sixth place.
