Last Time Out
The Jaguars picked up their second win in the 2023-24 MAC-SBC Challenge Saturday afternoon in the Mitchell Center, defeating Northern Illinois 75-66. A red-hot shooting display powered the Jags past the Huskies as South Alabama hit a season-high 13 three-pointers and shot more efficiently from behind the arc (48.1) than from the floor (45.2). Tyrell Jones led the Jags, tying his season-high with 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from downtown with three steals.
Notes
- South Alabama won back-to-back games at home for the first time since late December against Alabama A&M and Spring Hill.
- The Jags have been incredibly efficient from the free-throw line this year. South ranks second in the Sun Belt in free throw percentage, shooting 74.6 percent from the charity stripe. Through 25 games, this is the third-highest free-throw percentage in program history. South also set a new season-high in free throws made with 31 against Georgia Southern.
- After making their first start in two months against Georgia Southern, Julian Margrave and Marcus Millender have had an electric last two games in the Mitchell Center. Margrave averaged 13.5 points on 9-of-17 shooting from three-point range, five rebounds, and 1.5 steals, while Millender contributed 10 points, six assists, and 4.5 rebounds in two home contests against Georgia Southern and NIU.
- The Jags had a red-hot night shooting the basketball against NIU, making a season-high 13 three-pointers. South shot 48.1 percent from behind the arc compared to 45.2 percent from the field. Tyrell Jones led with five triples, Julian Margrave made four threes, and Marcus Millender, Elijah Ormiston, Judah Brown, and Isiah Gaiter added one three-pointer.
- Tyrell Jones has been a dominant force for the Jaguars through the last six games. He is averaging 17 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.1 steals in that stretch. Jones tied his season-high for the second time this season against NIU, scoring 23 points on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range with three rebounds.
- Isiah Gaiter ranks Top-10 in the Sun Belt in several statistical categories. He ranks sixth in free throw percentage (82.9), seventh in field goal percentage (45.6), and 10th in points per game (14.0).
- South Alabama ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in turnover margin. The Jags sport a 0.88 ratio and had an extremely efficient night against NIU, dishing out 17 assists and only committing seven turnovers.
- Thomas Howell has been a dominant force on the glass this season for the Jaguars. He is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game and set a new career-high with 17 rebounds against Georgia State.
Texas State Notes (11-14; 4-8)
- The Bobcats have rattled off four straight wins over South Alabama, App State, Southern Miss, and Ball State. They rank 11th in the Sun Belt.
- Texas State is fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in team defense, holding its opponents an average of 69.4 points per game.
- Kaden Gumbs is fourth in the Sun Belt in assists per game, contributing nearly 3.5 per contest. Brandon Love is third in the Sun Belt in blocks per game, averaging 1.8.

- South Alabama could not overcome a slow first half and fell 74-66 to Texas State in San Marcos. Tyrell Jones was the only Jaguar to finish with double figures with 16 points, and the Jags finished with a first-half season-low of 23 points. The Bobcats shot an electric 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the arc and had four players finish with double figures.
