South Alabama Hosts Mobile in Non-Conference Finale Monday

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team will close non conference play with a Monday night home match up against Mobile on Dec.30 at 7 p.m. CT in the Mitchell Center.

Last Time Out

South Alabama dominated James Madison in its' Sun Belt conference opener 77-49. The Jags commanded both ends of the court, shooting 51.8 percent from the floor and scoring 36 points in the paint. They also limited JMU to 29.1 percent from the field and forced 15 Duke turnovers. 


Jaguar Notes You Need to Know

- The Jags have excelled at minimizing fouls and converting defensive stops into scoring opportunities. South ranks fourth in the country in fewest fouls per game (12.4), ninth in turnovers per game (9.2), 16th in turnover margin (+5.2), and 19th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.67). The Jags also rank 32nd in the country with 15.3 fast break points per game and 37th in scoring defense (64.5) while sitting at the top of the Sun Belt in all six categories. 

- Through 12 contests, Myles Corey has shown he's one of the premier players in the Sun Belt and the country. He leads the Sun Belt and ranks 59th in the country in points (18.4) per game. Corey ranks second in the conference in minutes (33.7), fourth in field goal percentage (47.5), third in assists per game (4.6), and seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). The Ontario, Calif., native won Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Nov.30 after averaging 20.3 points and 2.3 assists on 58 percent shooting throughout three home contests. Corey finished with a season-high 28 points against Mercer, and a double-double 20-point 11 assist stat line in the season opener versus Central Michigan.

 -In seven seasons at the helm of the Jaguar program, Richie Riley has led his teams to a dominant 77-29 record while playing at home in the Mitchell Center. The Jags sport a 6-2 record at home this season, winning five out of six in the previous home stand. Jags in Close Games

-Nine out of the 12 games this season have been decided by 10 points or less. 

- The Jags are 8-1 when scoring 70 points or more this season and 0-3 when scoring 70 points or less. Additionally, they are 5-2 when limiting their opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field and 6-2 when holding their opposition to 70 points or less. 
- South Alabama has prided themselves on their defensive effort this season. They currently rank second in the Sun Belt and 30th in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense at (38.8) South also limits its opponents to the fewest points per game in the Sun Belt and 37th in the country this season (64.5). 

 - Junior UAB transfer Barry Dunning Jr. has had an impressive last six games, averaging 14.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. The Mobile native set a new career high with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor and 3-for-6 behind the arc against TCU.
- JJ Wheat ranks first in the Sun Belt and 44th in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio with a (A:36-TO:13) (2.8). 

- The Jaguars lead the Sun Belt in assists per game, contributing 15.42 per contest. Three players average three or more assists per game-- Myles Corey (4.6), Randy Brady (3.3), and JJ Wheat (3.0). 

. - At 41 years old, Richie Riley claimed the 150th win of his career with a 74-65 victory over Alcorn State on (Nov.29). He has reached impressive milestones in back-to-back seasons as he became the third head coach in the South Alabama program history to reach 100 wins as Jags head coach last season versus Spring Hill. 

-  South Alabama has been dominant at shooting the three-ball this season, averaging 9.3 three-pointers per game, which ranks third in the Sun Belt and 62nd in the country. Myles Corey and Judah Brown sit in the Top 15 in the conference in three-pointers made per contest, each contributing 1.7 triples per game. or more. 


Series History

  • South dropped their first game in the series against the University of Mobile a year ago in the home season opener 83-74. Before that matchup, USA held a nine-game win streak over the Rams with a margin of victory of 28.2. 
  • Head Coach Richie Riley holds a 5-1 record over the Rams.

  • Former Jaguar assistant coach Darnell Archey enters his sixth season at the helm of the Mobile program. 
  • The Rams sport a 9-3 record, winning three of their last four with a thrilling victory over Truett McConnell. 
  • Ezra Mckenna is one of the best forwards in the NAIA averaging 18.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest.
