MOBILE, Ala. | After making the program's sixth NCAA tournament appearance a year ago, South Alabama will certainly be tested again this spring as the Jaguars are set to face nine NCAA Regional teams from a year ago in the 2025 schedule announced by head coach
Becky Clark on Monday.
Along with Sun Belt foes Louisiana and Texas State, Alabama, Auburn, Arizona, Cal State Fullerton, LSU, Ole Miss, and Southeastern Louisiana each earned a postseason berth last May with the Crimson Tide advancing to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the second straight season and their 15th overall appearance.
Highlighting the 25-game home slate are midweek contests versus both Alabama and Auburn, along with a pair of games against Notre Dame during week three of the season at one of the Jaguars' two home tournaments.
"I feel like this is a fan-friendly schedule with two home tournaments and some great home midweeks," Clark said. "There will be multiple opportunities for Jag Nation to see great softball at Jaguar Field. As usual we will play an overall challenging schedule and are excited to add a new venue to the list when we travel west and play in the University of Arizona tournament. Overall I feel like we have a great mix of teams and look forward to the competition."
The opening weekend slate will see South open up at Jaguar Field when it host the South Alabama Invitational (Feb. 6-9). The Jags will open the tournament and the season on Thursday, Feb. 6 against in-state foe UAB, and then take on Murray State, Illinois-Chicago (twice) and Northwestern State over the four-day event.
The Jaguars will then head out on the road the following weekend (Feb. 13-15) as they travel out West to compete at the Bear Down Fiesta hosted by Arizona at Hillenbrand Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. South Alabama will face a pair of NCAA tournament opponents on the first two days, taking on the host Wildcats – who won 39 games a year ago and advanced to the Stillwater Super Regional – and Cal State Fullerton – who competed at the Stanford Regional. South will also face Big 10-member Iowa and Ohio on the final day.
The Jags return home for a midweek contest versus Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 19) – the first of six-straight games at Jaguar Field, before hosting the Mardi Gras Classic (Feb. 21-23). South will host Lipscomb, Notre Dame (twice), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Maine at the tournament. The two games versus the Fighting Irish will be the first in the series in Mobile.
Weeks four and five of the spring slate sees the Jaguars head back out on the road for a pair of tournaments hosted by a pair of SEC foes, which begins with five games at the Ole Miss Classic hosted by the Rebels (Feb. 28-March 2) in Oxford, Miss. South will take on Nichols State and have a pair of games versus both Murray State and Ole Miss.
The following week, the Jaguars will continue on the road as they begin the week with a midweek match up at McNeese State, who won 40 games and claimed the Southland Conference regular-season title. South will also travel Baton Rouge, La., that week to compete at the LSU Round Robin (March 7-9). South Alabama will take on the Tigers and Minnesota at the three-day tournament.
Before stepping into Sun Belt Conference play, the Jaguars will host Alabama (March 11). The trip to Mobile marks the 18th series meeting and the first by the Tide since the 2018 season. South will also face Auburn twice in a home-and-home series. The Jags will face the Tigers at Jane B. Moore Field (March 19) and then welcome them to Mobile on April 23 for its final midweek game of the season. The trip to Jaguar Field marks the first regular-season meeting between the two programs since 2015 and the first in Mobile since 2011. This season marks the first time since 2015 that the Jags have faced both in-state programs during the same season and the first time since 2008, the program's second season, that both clubs have played in Mobile versus South in the same year.
Four of the Jags' eight Sun Belt Conference series will be at Jaguar Field this spring with the first coming during the opening weekend of league play versus James Madison. The Dukes will be making their first-ever trip to Mobile on March 14-16. In addition to the series versus JMU, South will also host three-game series versus Sun Belt members Southern Miss (March 28-30), Marshall (April 11-13) and ULM (April 25-27).
The Jaguars are scheduled to open up league play versus defending regular-season and tournament champion Louisiana (March 15-17). The Ragin' Cajuns have won 19 regular-season titles and 18 tournament titles, while Louisiana and South have finished as the top two clubs in the league each of the last two seasons and five time since 2014.
USA is also scheduled to have league road series at Georgia State (March 21-23), at Texas State (April 4-6), at Louisiana (April 17-19) and at Troy (May 1-3). The Ragin' Cajuns have won 20 regular-season titles and 18 tournament titles, while Louisiana and South have finished as the top two clubs in the league five time since 2014.
This year's Sun Belt Conference Championship is scheduled to be hosted by Troy, May 7-10 at Trojan Field.
NCAA Regional (May 16-18) and NCAA Super Regional (May 23-25) rounds will be held on campus sites, while the Women's College World Series will take place on May 29-June 6 once again at USA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
