BATON ROUGE, La. – Javier Montoya made a run to the quarterfinals over the weekend to lead South Alabama Men's Tennis at the ITA Southern Regionals, hosted by LSU.
Montoya's performance lands him the opportunity to advance to sectionals which will be hosted by Florida State in November.
"I am very pleased with the way we competed and I am very pleased with the results," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "It was a great weekend for South Alabama Tennis."
Along with Montoya,
Braden Hannig,
Harold van Raemdonck and
Juan Accossatto competed in the tournament's main draw and had a chance at advancing. Accossatto won his first-round matchup against Kotaro Matsumura from Nicholls 6-1, 7-5 before falling to his next opponent from Alabama 7-6 (2), 6-1. After advancing to the main draw from the qualifiers, Hannig knocked off Kai Cowcher from Alabama A&M 6-4, 7-5 and then took one of the nation's top-30 players down to the wire before eventually falling to LSU's Aleksi Lofman 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
"Braden took LSU's best player down to the wire," Brochu added. "Of course he was disappointed, but he almost beat one of the top players in the country, so that was a very good performance by him."
Montoya's run in the main draw started with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Lachlan Brain from North Alabama before he advanced to take down Matthieu Chambonniere from Ole Miss in the round of 32 on a score of 7-6, 6-2. Montoya would then face another power opponent in the round of 16 in Mississippi State's Michal Novansky, and he won 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. Waiting for him in the quarterfinals was Auburn's Billy Blaydes who narrowly won the first set 7-6 (7-1) before clinching the match in the second set.
"Javier pulled out one of the best performances I've seen from him in a while," Brochu said. "It was amazing tennis. He stayed so solid and so focus. That was a very good win."
After dropping his first-round matchup in the main draw,
Harold van Raemdonck competed in the consolation round of the main draw and knocked off his adversary from Louisiana by a score of 6-4, 6-2. Victor Frumholz also made the trip for South Alabama, but retired early with an injury after playing multiple matches Wednesday and Thursday.
