Jags Hit the Road to Take on James Madison and Marshall

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team (8-7; 1-2) will be looking to get back in the win column this week as they travel to James Madison on Thursday, Jan.11 before heading to Marshall on Saturday, Jan.13.

Last Time Out

 South Alabama struggled defensively throughout the night and fell to Georgia State 90-76 Saturday afternoon in the Mitchell Center. Georgia State shot 55.0 percent from the field, 46.7 percent from behind the arc, and had six players finish with double figures in scoring to secure the dominant victory. 

South Alabama Notes

  • South Alabama will be looking to get back on track after falling in two home Sun Belt contests last week to App State 84-91 and Georgia State 76-90. 
  • The Jaguars have been automatic from the free-throw line this season. South ranks second in the Sun Belt from the charity stripe, shooting 74.1 percent on the season. 
  • Isiah Gaiter has been an all-around workhorse this year for the Jags, logging 16.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. He has scored double figures in 13 out of 15 games this year and put up a new career-high of 29 points against App State last week. 
  • Gaiter ranks in the top 10 in several categories in the Sun Belt Conference. He is currently first in the league in minutes per game (35.3), fourth in points per game (16.4), sixth in field goal percentage (47.6), and seventh in free-throw percentage (82.8). 
  • Tyrell Jones has been on a tear as of late. Jones set a new career-high for the second game in a row against Georgia State, finishing with 22 points. He has scored double figures in six of the last seven games and 2.5 per assist each contest. 
  • South Alabama has caused chaos in the back court throughout the season, holding a 31.0 opponent three-point percentage. 
  • Thomas Howell has been a menace on the glass for South Alabama. Howell is eighth in the conference in rebounds per game (7.0) and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds against Georgia State. 
  • The Jags won four games in a row in December. The last time South Alabama went undefeated in that month was in 2008, when they made their last NCAA Tournament appearance. 
  • South picked up their first Sun Belt Conference win of the season in a 22-point second-half comeback over Old Dominion. The Jags outscored the Monarchs 34 to 10 in the final 14 minutes of the game to secure the 61-59 win. 
  • South Alabama returned 20.6 points per game for the 2023-24 season. 

About James Madison (14-1; 2-1)

  • After an impressive run to start the season, James Madison suffered its first defeat last Saturday night to Southern Miss 81-71. 
  • The Dukes were the first team in the entire country to reach 14 wins. 
  • They began their season with an upset 79-76 win over No. 4 ranked Michigan State. 
  • Terrence Edwards Jr. and T.J. Bickerstaff have led James Madison. Edwards ranks second in the conference in points per game, averaging 17.1 points per contest, while Bickerstaff ranks sixth, contributing 15.9 points per game. 
  • JMU has a high-powered offensive attack, ranking first in the Sun Belt and fifth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 88.8 points per game.

  • South Alabama leads the all-time series 4-2. The last time these two teams faced off the Jags came out victorious in the Sun Belt Conference Semifinals, winning 75-66.

About Marshall (8-8; 3-0)

  • The Thundering Herd have won five of their last six games, including their first three Sun Belt Conference matchups. Marshall has defeated Texas State 79-75, ULM 68-57, and Louisiana 68-61. 
  • Obinna Killen-Anochili powers the Marshall offense, scoring 16.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per contest. 
  • Marshall is third in the Sun Belt Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio with an average of 1.23 ratio. 
  • Nate Martin is nearly averaging a double-double, scoring 11.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game.
