Campo scores late equalizer, Jags battle Mississippi State to first draw of the season

MOBILE, Ala. – Defense was on display Thursday at The Cage, as the Jags battled Mississippi State to a 1-1 draw, South's first of the season.

Both teams had a strong defensive first half, with the Jags and the Bulldogs going into halftime with four shots each. Neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes, going into the half even at zero.

Mississippi State broke the stalemate halfway through the second, with Zoe Main scoring off a deflection in the 71st minute.

The Jags kept the pressure on the Bulldog defense, taking five shots in the second half. The Jags found the equalizer late in the second half, with freshman Irene Campo scoring in the 87th minute to even the score at one apiece.

Mississippi State had a last-second push, but Jaguar keeper Jaidy Gutierrez Campos came up with a save to end the match at 1-1.

The Jags ended the night with nine shots, while MSU totaled 10.

SCORING SUMMARY
QUOTABLE
Head Coach Richard Moodie:
"The girls are impassive, they have a never-say-die attitude and they fought all the way to the end. The coaching staff, not me, should take all the credit. We changed our shape, we made some substitutions, which came from Rob and Adrian and Carson, so credit to them. In these moments you have to adjust tactically and we scored off it. I thought we had some good chances, I thought we could have won this game. Seems we always tie Mississippi State."

On the team battling back:
"After the goal, it became a bit of a kick fest, but the attitude is part of it too. They had a good game plan, I thought we figured it out, but when they scored we had to change shape and style. A 17-year-old freshman comes off the bench and scores, it's a great moment and you can see how much it means to the girls. It's a really tight-knit group, I'd expect nothing less."
