MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama men's tennis finished the season ranked No. 62, according to the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, released Wednesday.
The Jags finished the 2023 slate with a 17-8 record, going 7-1 in Sun Belt action. South posted a perfect 9-0 record at home and now holds a 23-match winning streak at home, with the last lost in Mobile coming on Feb. 26, 2021.
The Jags are host to the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in
Sebastien Collard, who won the same award in 2022. Collard, a senior from Gatineau, Quebec, posted a 14-7 record in dual match play this season, going 7-1 in conference play, all from the number one spot. His lone conference loss came in three sets, where he fell 6-7 in the final set.
During the season, the Jags earned a ranked win over conference foe Old Dominion, who was ranked No. 75 at the time.
South Alabama is the highest ranked Sun Belt Conference team to end the season, with ODU coming in at 65 and Louisiana at 74.
"Very proud of the guys, that's a good accomplishment," head coach Nick Brochu said. "At the beginning of the year we always set goals and one of those goals is to finish top 50 in the nation. We were 23 spots off, that's still pretty good – at least we finished top 65. That's a great statement about our program and how much effort our guys have put in. That all starts in the summer. Our guys come in and work hard in the summer. We had a good fall too. You earn your team ranking in the spring, so it's a good testiment to how hard these guys work and how they work as a team. Very proud of them. Being the highest Sun Belt team feels good. This year we had three Sun Belt teams ranked in the top 75 and that proves our conference is getting stronger and stronger. Our conference is getting more competitive, which makes everybody better. Very happy about this."
