MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. | Colette Uys captured gold in the women's shot put to lead South Alabama on day two of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Uys finished with a personal best throw of 16.68 meters (55-03.75) on her third throw of the event, winning by just over two feet. She was joined in earning points for the Jags by
Bodine Degli-Umberti in eighth place with a throw of 14.58 meters (47-10.00).
The early attention on Friday was on the multi-events where
Sebastian Reyneke reached the medal stand in the Decathlon with a second-place finish. He finished the event with 7.331 points just 18 points back of Colby Eddowes of Arkansas State for the top spot.
Brylan Shirley also scored points for the men with a fifth-place finish (6781) and
Nic Glass in seventh (6307) for South Alabama.
In the Heptathlon,
Hanna-Mai Vaikla scored for the women by finishing fourth with 5,252 points.
Starlynn Costa reached the medal stand in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a third-place finish in a time of 10:35.99 just three seconds behind second. The time was a new personal best for Costa in the event.
Sebastian Loschner and
Francois Prinsloo scored points for the men in the shot put with Loschner finishing fourth with a throw of 17,52 meters (57-05.75) – a new season best. Meanwhile, Prinsloo finished eighth with a personal best throw of 16.83 meters (55-02.75). The Jags also got points in the pole vault with
David Dolan finishing tied for fifth in the event with a height of 4.91 meters (16-01.25).
The meet concludes on Saturday with both teams in second place, each trailing Arkansas State. On the men's side, the Jags have 50.5 points and trail the Red Wolves who have amassed 73.5 points. Meanwhile, on the women's side, South Alabama has 48 total points and sit 14 behind Arkansas State (62).
