MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama women's tennis heads east for conference matches against Appalachian State on Saturday and Marshall on Sunday. Both matches will be at 9 a.m. CT.
South is 14-3 (4-2) on the year, coming off two conference wins, beating Coastal Carolina 4-3 on Saturday and Georgia Southern 4-1 on Sunday. South Alabama is now 9-0 at home in 2023.
In Saturday's match, the Jags got wins from
Luminita Tutunaru,
Elysia Pool and
Tereza Dejnozkova to claim three singles wins, but winning the doubles point gave South the 4-3 win.
On Sunday, South dropped the doubles point but totaled four straight points Tutunaru, Pool,
Delien Kleinhans and
Chems Doha Zeghlouli in singles to clinch the 4-1 win.
Tutunaru posted a 3-1 weekend, with two singles win, a doubles win and a doubles loss, and was named Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The honor was the first of her career.
Tutunaru is now 13-3 on the year and leads the Jaguar squad in wins. Freshmen Dejnozkova and Zeghlouli are both 11-2 on the year
App State is 8-6 on the year, with a 5-2 conference record. The Mountaineers went 1-1 last weekend, falling to Louisiana but beating Texas State.
Sun Belt newcomers Marshall is 11-6 on the season, posting a 5-2 conference record. They went 2-0 last weekend, beating Louisiana and Texas State.
South Alabama is 6-1 all-time against Appalachian State, with the lone loss coming in 2019 in Boone.
The Jags are 3-3 against Marshall, with the last meeting between the teams coming in 2009 during the NCAA Tournament. The Jags and the Herd will be meeting for the first time as conference opponents on Sunday.
