Senior Journals: One more time around the bases with Mackenzie Brasher

Five seniors are listed among the 2023 South Alabama softball roster, and each Monday throughout the season, one will give fans a view through their eyes as they recap the previous week. On tap this week is outfielder Mackenzie Brasher.

Hi everyone, my name is Mackenzie Brasher and I will be doing the journal for this weekend again Georgia Southern! It was an interested weekend full of laugher, happiness, and wins.

Tuesday
Tonight, we had our Annual Pete Tolbert Night of Champions which recognizes student-athletes with a few awards. The theme for the night was "Cocktail Attire", which requires us to get dressed up. It's always exciting seeing everyone all dressed up outside of softball clothes. After getting dressed, a few of my friends met up to take pictures before the event started. Once I got to the Mitchell Center, I grab a bite to eat and headed down for the ceremony. This event was big for the softball team because we received a lot of recognition. Victoria Ortiz won the Extra Mile Award and was selected as the NCAA Woman of the Year nominee for South Alabama. Odalys Cordova received the Perseverance Award after being injured last year and battling back. Olivia Lackie was also a finalist for Female Student Athlete of the Year. Overall, the event was successful. Afterwards I went to get Mexican with Marley Sims and Meredith Keel.

Wednesday – Thursday
Wednesday was a big day for preparing for the weekend series that was ahead. We practiced in order to make sure everything was in place. Thursday was our travel day. We spent eight hours on the bus before finally arriving at Georgia Southern. Once we arrived, we had a short practice session and work out to get our bodies ready for the series. We headed back to the hotel for a big dinner and rested up for game day.

Friday
After a long day of traveling on Thursday, game day is finally here. Opening day of the series usually looks a little different because we don't play until 6 p.m. Before the games, I usually hangout with my friends, DoorDash coffee, enjoy a big breakfast, and look over school work. At this point, it's an everyday thing for Meredith to order DoorDash for our morning coffee. This is usually one of my favorite parts of the weekend, because we all know how much I enjoy coffee. Next, we headed off to lunch at Ruby Tuesdays where we hung out for a few hours. My parents are always at every game, but this weekend they weren't able to make it so I called them and we talked for a while. Game time rolled around and it was time to go. We started the series off strong with a win over Georgia Southern giving us out 30th win on the season. After the game, Coach (Becky Clark) ordered a huge cake to celebrate our 30th win!

Saturday
Saturdays are my favorite because we are able to play during the best part of the day. We started our day with morning coffee and then we headed to Tropical Smoothie. I got the Sunset Point smoothie and the chicken pesto wrap. This is the best smoothie king combo! As we roll up to the field, we are jamming to music to get everyone hype for the game! We made a statement with another big win to take the series. As we head back to the hotel, I was beyond excited because we were having Uncle Shug's for dinner. Uncle Shug's brings back so many good memories of when some of my other friends played here at South.

Sunday
Sunday mornings start a little early with our game times at noon. I woke up early enough to have breakfast and enjoy my morning. We packed the bus and head back to Georgia Southern for the final game of the series. This was the best game and most electrifying the Jags had all weekend. We set a goal to score two runs per innings and we did it. Meredith Keel blasted her second home run of the season off the scoreboard. We swept the series with a 11-0 win in five innings. On the way back, we stopped at one of my favorites places to eat, Moe's Southwest Grill. At this point, the day couldn't get any better. Kylie (Scioneaux) who does our social media, wanted to create a hype video from the weekend because it was her last time with us before she graduates. If you know anything about this team, you know we love to dance so for two hours of the bus ride we played music and danced for the hype video.

Thank you JagNation for all your support!
