Quotable from coach Nick Brochu
"It feels good to be at home. We had not played in a while; our last match was two weeks ago. The guys were excited to get back out on the court. FGCU has been a great program over the last few years, they've been to NCAAs, so we knew it was a big match. We had a good crowd so the guys were excited. The key point here is that we reshuffled our doubles teams, and it worked out perfectly. The guys had so much energy and we definitely took the doubles point by storm and got up early on all three courts and we kept the lead. That was a good statement, which was the goal.
Â
The second goal was to then carry over the momentum to singles, and I thought we did well. One of the guys we said was gonna be a leader today was
Javier Montoya. We knew at number six, that he was the better player and he didn't play doubles, so he was full of energy. He was playing on the last court and we told him we had to hear him and he needed to be the leader, and he stepped up big time. He took care of business on the scoreboard but he was loud and cheering, and it was contagious. Right next to him was Martin, who dominated his opponent but was also very loud. We had great energy coming from those two courts, and that definitely helps everybody else.
Â
I believe that because we were up really early, up 3-0, it took a lot of pressure off guys like Seb at number one, it made him relax and he started playing better and came back to beat an excellent player. That's a big win. I keep telling our guys when you have a chance to win your match early and get us on the board, it gives the other guys a chance to relax and it puts pressure on your opponent, and I think FGCU saw we were getting close to the finish line and I think they got nervous.
Â
Tremendous effort from Max today. He's been under the weather the past few days and we didn't know if he could finish the match. He gave everything he had to the point where he clinched the match but was so tired he couldn't celebrate. He showed a lot of heart today. This is a great win for us and it's good to have a win like this before we got to Miami."
