South Alabama Notes

  • The Jaguars welcome seven newcomers to the program for the 2023-24 season. Four are transfers, including two from the Division l level, two from the Division ll level, and three Freshmen. Nine states are represented on the roster, and there are three freshmen, one sophomore, four juniors, three seniors, and one graduate student on the team.

  • USA will be led by their lone returning guard this season, Tyrell Jones. Jones started 33 games last season and averaged 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. The Sun Belt Conference also named Jones to the Preseason All-Sun Belt second team.

  • The Sun Belt Conference preseason poll picked South Alabama to finish sixth. The Jaguars finished seventh last season with a 9-9 conference record.

  • The Jags finished second in the Sun Belt in team defense, allowing only 65.2 points per game and limiting their opponents to 29.4 percent shooting from behind the arc each contest.

  • Leading the Jaguars in the paint this season will be a transfer from Sun Belt Conference rival ULM Thomas Howell. Howell ranked seventh in rebounds per game and fourth in minutes played per game (36.6) in the Sun Belt in 2023.

  • Newcomers Isiah Gaiter (11), Maxwell Land (5), and Samuel Tabe (7) recorded 23 total 20-point games at their previous destinations last season.

  • Three players have starting experience for the Jags: Tyrell Jones, Judah Brown, and Marshall Kearing

  • South Alabama has won 31 consecutive home openers dating back to 1992.

  • This season, the Jaguars will travel to Big Ten country to play Maryland for the first time in program history on Nov. 25.

Mobile Notes

  • Mobile is led by head coach Darnell Archey, who has a 59-56 overall record throughout his time with the Rams. Archey is no stranger to South Alabama as he served as an assistant coach on South's staff from 2013-2018.

  • The Rams are 3-1 this season with wins over St. Thomas University (Fla.), Pensacola Christian College, and Southern University of New Orleans.

  • As a team, they average 82.3 points and 62.3 points allowed per game.

  • Demariee Jones leads the way for the Rams, scoring 14.7 points per contest this season.

  • Mobile dropped its first game of the SSAC vs SUN Conference Challenge on Nov.3 as Southeastern University edged out the Rams 78-75.
