Jaguars hit the road to take on Maryland

MOBILE, Ala. – The South Alabama men's basketball team (4-3 )will start a three-game road swing at the University of Maryland (2-3) on Saturday, Nov.25 at 6 p.m. CST in the Xfinity Center. 

This game begins a stretch of three road contests away from the Mitchell Center. 

The Jaguars hope to continue a three-game win streak after defeating Denver, SIUE, and Lynn last week. Maryland is looking to build momentum after beating UMBC, 92-68 last Tuesday night.

Last Time Out

South Alabama toppled the Lynn Fighting Knights 74-62 Tuesday night. Maxwell Land scored a new season-high 17 points on a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.

This will be the first matchup between the Jaguars and the Terrapins.

About Maryland (2-3) 

  • Maryland is ranked 14th in the Big Ten conference. They've picked up wins over UMBC and Mount St Mary's and dropped games to Davidson, UAB, and Villanova. 
  • Kevin Willard is entering his second year at the helm of Maryland basketball. Willard sports a 24-16 record with the Terps and a 294-226 overall record after 12 years of head coaching experience at Seton Hall and Iona. 
  • Jahmir Young and Julian Reese lead the Terps. Young averages 14.6 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.2 steals, while Reese averages 12.8 points and 8.4 rebounds with two double-doubles this season. 

NOTES

  • The Jaguars have a 1-6 record against Big Ten opponents. Their only top-10 win in program history came against Ohio State as the Jags defeated the Buckeyes 76-67 in 1980. 
  • Isiah Gaiter has scored double-figures in six of the first seven Jaguar contests of the season. Gaiter now ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage, shooting 58.6 percent on the season. 
  • Marcus Millender is second in the Sun Belt Conference and 18th in the country in assists per game (4.7). Millender has totaled 32 assists in seven games this season.
  • Julian Margrave has been electric from behind the arc this season. Margrave set a new career-high of 22 points on six three-pointers against SIUE. Margrave also leads the Jaguars in three-point percentage, shooting 50.0 percent on the season. 
  •  South Alabama closed the Jaguar Classic with a 2-1 record with wins over Denver and SIUE after dropping the opening tournament game to Nicholls. 
  • Against SIUE, Julian Margrave and Isiah Gaiter became the first two Jaguars to score 20 points in the same game since January 2022. 
  • Thomas Howell recorded his first double-double in a Jaguar uniform and the seventh in his career against Denver, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. 
  • South Alabama recorded its season high in field goal percentage and three-point percentage against SIUE. The Jaguars shot 61.7 percent from the floor and 61.1 percent from downtown.
  • The Jaguars have five players averaging double-digits this season. Isiah Gaiter (16.4), Julian Margrave (12.3), Maxwell Land (11.6), Marcus Millender (10.9), and Tyrell Jones (10.0) all contribute double figures in scoring each game. 
  • South Alabama averages 75.6 points per game, while Maryland scores 64.6 points per contest. 
  • The Jaguars are currently ranked fifth in the Sun Belt Conference, while Maryland sits in 14th place in the Big Ten. 
  • South Alabama was picked to finish sixth in the Sun Belt Coaches poll, while the Big Ten picked Maryland to finish in third.
