Jaguars set to face James Madison in Sun Belt semifinals

MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 1 seed South Alabama Jaguars continue play in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Soccer Championship on Friday, taking on the No. 5 seed James Madison.
 
South defeated Texas State 2-1 on in the quarterfinals, while James Madison got a 2-1 overtime win over App State. The semifinal match will be just the second meeting between the two teams.
 
The match will be streamed on ESPN+ and Live Stats will be available.

South Alabama Notes
  • Graduate forward Gabby Hollar was named Sun Belt Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year. Hollar is joined by graduate defender Abby Jacobs, the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Richard Moodie also earned some recognition, earning the honor of Coach of the Year.
  • It is the third year in a row a Jaguar has been named Player of the Year, Offensive of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, and the second time the same player has earned all three honors.
  • Hollar and Jacobs were also named First-Team All-Conference and were joined by graduate midfielder Gracie Wilson. Five Jags were named Second-Team All-Conference: forwards Jasmine Greene and Chiara Singarella, midfielder Irene Campo, defender Amber Fortenberry and goalkeeper Jaidy Gutierrez Campos.
  • South Alabama is one of 3 teams still undefeated on the season with a 16-0-3 recorded. South is ranked 3rd in the nation in win-loss percentage (.921).
  • The 2023 South Alabama team leads the Sun Belt in 11 categories, including total goals (52), scoring offense (2.74), total points (152), goal differential (43), GAA (.39), and shots on goal per game (8.28).
  • The Jags are also ranked third in the country in goal differential (44), fifth in GAA (.421), ninth in scoring offense (2.74) and sixth in total goals (52).
  • Graduate student Gracie Wilson played in her 100th career match vs Texas State, making her one of just two players to reach the 100 mark. In the match vs Arkansas State, she recorded her 101st appearance, making her the new program leader for career appearances.
  • Gabby Hollar leads the Jags with 12 goals on the year.
  • With an assist in South Alabama's 5-0 win over Louisiana, Gracie Wilson became the new program leader for career assists with 31. Wilson is tied for second on the team this season for assists with five.
  • South Alabama has had 13 different Jags score this season, with 10 Jaguars scoring multiple goals on the season.
 
 
James Madison Notes
  • James Madison beat App State, 2-1, in overtime with a goal from Jeanette Fieldsend, her first career goal to reach the semifinals.
  • Suwaibatu Mohammed leads the Dukes in points with 17, and is tied for the most goals (six) and assists (five) on the squad.
  • Amanda Attanasi is tied with Mohammed in goals with Shea Collins tied for assists. Collins has taken the most shots with 38 while Attanasi has put 22 shots on goal to lead the side.
  • Alexandra Blom has been the main keeper for the Dukes this season, appearing in 18 games and recording eight solo clean sheets.
 
Series History vs. James Madison
  • South Alabama and James Madison are meeting for just the second time ever, with the lone match between the two being a scoreless draw a season ago.
