HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Led by perfect singles weekends from
Juan Accossatto and
Braden Hannig, South Alabama men's tennis wrapped up its second tournament of the fall at the Southern Miss Fall Invitational.
"I'm very happy with this weekend," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "Another good weekend, and the guys are definitely progressing. We had six guys this weekend, and everybody played well. Every day for three days in a row, we won the majority of singes. I'm very impressed with Juan and Braden this weekend. They both went 3-0, so even if they were playing lower in the lineup, they took care of business and did their jobs. I'm very impressed with those two. Fall is very important for them. These guys are working hard and they're definitely showing that they want to help the team."
DAY ONE
The first day started strong for the Jaguars as the teams of
Jack Clements and Ristislav Halfinger, and Hannig and Joaquim Almeida both picked up doubles victories. Clements and Halfinger cruised to a 6-3 decision while Hannig and Almeida had to tough out their match 7-5.
Halfinger continued a strong start to the weekend in singles play when he defeated his singles opponent from Tulane in straight sets with a 6-3, 6-1 score. Accossatto and Hannig then started their perfect singles weekend with wins over their counterparts from Louisiana. Accossatto dominated the first set 6-0 before closing his victory with a 6-4 score in the second set. Hannig's match was much tighter, but he prevailed on a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). True freshman Theo Mottier also played well in his weekend debut, earning a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
DAY TWO
Continuing to experiment with their doubles partners on day two, the Jags were represented by Almeida and Mottier who earned the lone doubles victory of the day. The USA newcomer duo dominated their oppoonents from Southern Miss, not conceding a game in the match with a 6-0 win.
Clements got on the board for the weekend in singles play when he defeated his opponent from New Orleans. The Australian won the first set 7-6 (7-1) and led 5-1 in the second set before his counterpart retired. Halfinger then moved to 2-0 for the weekend with a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Accossatto rounded out the USA singles lineup by securing a decisive victory over his New Orleans foe 6-2, 6-1.
DAY THREE
Accossatto completed his hat trick of victories Sunday when sailed to a 6-2, 6-1 win over his opponent from Southern Miss. Hannig likewise stayed perfect when he turned in an impressive 6-0, 6-2 performance over his Southern Miss foe. Almeida was the third and final jaguar to win on Sunday, securing a 6-2, 6-1 score over Southern Miss.
"Singles was good," Brochu added. "I saw some improvement from our last tournament in Lake Charles. These are tough tournaments because we play three days in a row, which is excellent prep for our next tournament which is regionals. That's the most important tournament of the fall for us. I think the guys are going to be ready. I think the guys are getting close to playing top level. We've still got a few things to touch up this week, but I'm very happy about the way we competed this weekend."
"Doubles has also been good. We tried different pairs again and the guys are always up for the challenge to get a new partner. They're very vocal, they worked together and it's very good to see because you never know what's going to happen during the season. You're not always going to have the same partner. I'm very happy with doubles. We were very competitive and able to play at a high level with different guys on the team."
UP NEXT
The Jaguars will travel to Auburn later this week for the ITA Regionals. Tournament play will run Oct. 12-15.
