LAFAYETTE. LA – Juan Accossatto won three-straight singles matches to advance to the finals and lead South Alabama at the Cajuns Classic, hosted by Louisiana.
"I think overall we had a tournament," said head coach Nick Brochu. "We did not have a good day Friday. It was kind of disappointing and we had to regroup. We had do go back to doing things the right way and not doing anything special, and then we came back the second day and the second day was perfect. The highlight of the weekend was probably Juan making it all the way to the final of his draw. He fought so hard and I'm so proud of him."
FIRST ROUND
Jack Clements and
Juan Accossatto teamed up to help South Alabama get off to a good start in doubles when they defeated Brock Anderson and Ben Koch from LSU on a score of 6-3. Accossatto then carried his strong play over to the singles side where he again faced LSU's Anderson, and quickly put him away 6-3, 6-0.
SECOND ROUND
Accossatto continued his strong singles play in the second round when he earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the main draw. As a team, the Jaguars also picked up many more singles victories on day two as Clements, Joaquim Almedia and
Braden Hannig all won their consolation matches. Clements took down his opponent from Southern Miss 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 while Almeida defeated a Tulane player 6-4, 3-6, 10-3. Hannig finished off the round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Southern Miss.
THIRD ROUND
Accossatto's run to the championship match continued in the third round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Samuel Kyjaci of host Louisiana. In consolation play, Clements picked up a win over Southern Miss on a score of 6-1, 3-6, 10-4. Hannig followed that performance with a win of his own against Louisiana on a 6-3, 6-3 decision.
FINAL ROUND
Accossatto's championship run came up just short in the finals as he fell to Tulane's Sam Scherer 6-1, 7-6 (2). Hannig was the lone Jaguar to play in the final round consolation bracket, and he knocked off his opponent 7-5, 6-3 to give him a strong end to the weekend.
