LOUISVILLE, Ky. | While the entirety of the 2023 South Alabama softball schedule is still being constructed, at least a portion of it was unveiled Wednesday as the Jaguars were selected to compete in the 20th Annual NFCA Division I Leadoff Classic, which will be held on Feb. 10-12, 2023.
The three-day showcase will feature South Alabama along with 15 other teams from nine conferences, and will be held at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
The Jaguars last competed at the national event during the opening weekend of the 2020 season.
South Alabama, who finished second in the Sun Belt Conference last spring will open up tournament play with a pair of games on Friday, February 10 as it will take on Louisville at 10 a.m. (CT) on Field 1 and then 2022 College World participant Northwestern at 3 p.m. (CT) on Field 3. The Wildcats finished their season with a 45-13 record, appeared in the program's sixth WCWS and captured the Big Ten regular season title. NU finished ranked sixth nationally among the two major polls and was the program's first WCWS appearance since 2007.
On Saturday, February 11, the Jags will play the first of two games on the day with a 12:30 p.m. (CT) tilt on Field 4 against St. John's and then face Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee, who was a top 20 team, recorded 41 wins and advanced to the Super Regional. First pitch versus the Volunteers is set for 3 p.m. (CT) on Field 3.
South will then close out the weekend against Indiana on Sunday, February 12 at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on Field 4.
Along with South Alabama and the other four teams, the tournament field also includes Auburn, Fordham, Howard, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Pittsburgh, Prairie View A&M, Southern and Texas.
