MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama men's basketball will face two new opponents this season, as well as host Alabama and three of the four new Sun Belt Conference members as part of their 2022-23 season released by Head Coach
Richie Riley on Tuesday.
The Jaguars will open their season on November 9 as they host the University of Mobile. This will be the fourth year in a row South has hosted the Rams, and the Jags have won 30 straight home-openers. USA will then travel to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico (Nov. 11), which marks the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
South returns to the Mitchell Center to host Alabama on Nov. 15, and this will be the second game of a home-and-home series against the in-state opponent and the first time the Jags have hosted the Crimson Tide. The team then travels to Oklahoma to take on its second Power-5 opponent in as many games when South takes on the Sooners on Nov. 18 in Norman.
South Alabama will take part in the Hostilo Hoops Community Classic held in Savannah, Ga., over the Thanksgiving weekend, where the Jags will face Evansville on Friday (Nov. 25), Towson on Saturday (Nov. 26) and Robert Morris on Sunday (Nov. 27).
The Jags then make their way to Florida to play against Florida Atlantic (Nov. 30) before returning to their home state to take on UAB (Dec. 4) in Birmingham and Alabama A&M (Dec. 12) in Huntsville.
South will close out non-conference play at the Mitchell Center with Spring Hill (Dec. 19) and Jacksonville State (Dec. 21).
The Sun Belt conference schedule begins on Dec. 29, when the Jags travel to take on Georgia Southern, followed by a visit to Atlanta on New Years Eve to face Georgia State.
South Alabama will then have its first of two four-game home stretches of the season. They will host Arkansas State (Jan. 5), Texas State (Jan. 7), Sun Belt newcomer James Madison (Jan. 12) and Louisiana (Jan. 14).
The Jaguars then go on the road for two games, Southern Miss on Jan. 19 and Coastal Carolina on Jan. 21, before returning to the Mitchell Center to host another SBC newcomer in Old Dominion (Jan. 26) and in-state rival Troy on Jan. 28.
A three-game road trip follows, as the Jaguars travel to face Arkansas State (Feb. 2), ULM (Feb. 4) and Troy (Feb. 9), the second meeting in a four-game stretch versus the Trojans.
South follows that up with its second four-game homestand, beginning with Appalachian State on Feb. 11. They then face an out-of-conference opponent, Hartford, on, Feb. 13 before returning to conference play against Southern Miss (Feb. 16) and ULM (Feb. 18) which concludes a stretch of five games in 10 days.
The Jags close out the regular season with a trip to San Marcos to take on Texas State (Feb. 22) before heading to Louisiana to face the Ragin' Cajuns on Feb. 24.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will once again take place in Pensacola, Fla. and will run Feb. 28 – March 6.
