LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The South Alabama softball program continued to excel in the classroom as 16 student-athletes from the 2022 roster were named All-America Scholar Athlete by the Easton/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), during the 2021-22 academic year as announced by the organization.
Among the 2,155 Division I honorees representing South Alabama on the list are
Mackenzie Brasher,
Odalys Cordova,
Rachel Everett,
Jenna Hardy,
Kaitlyn Hughes,
Meredith Keel,
Emma Kropp,
Kamdyn Kvistad,
Olivia Lackie,
Erin McGlothlin,
Hannah Ogea,
Victoria Ortiz,
Shelby Sloan,
Bailey Welch,
Kassidy Wilcox and
Belle Wolfenden.
The selection marked the third to the list for Kvistad, while it was the second for Brasher, Hardy, Hughes, Keel, Kropp, Lackie, Ogea, Ortiz, Sloan, Welch and Wolfenden.
The 16 selections were second-most among Sun Belt Conference programs, just four behind Georgia State (20).Â
The individual award is given to student-athletes that acquire a 3.5 grade-point average or higher during said academic year. Â USA has had at least seven honorees in each season of its existence since the inaugural 2007 campaign and a total of 126 student-athletes at South Alabama have earned the honor under head coach
Becky Clark. Â
As a group, the Jaguars also set a new program mark for grade-point-average with a cumulative 3.581 mark, eclipsing the previous high of 3.531 set during the 2020-21 academic year. Out of 150 teams on the list, South Alabama tied with Boston University for 31st on the list, its second-highest ranking ever, just behind the 2013-14 academic year where the Jags placed 28th.Â
The ranking marked the ninth time South has recorded a top 75 placement on the list and the fourth top 50. USA's team, GPA was the second-highest among Sun Belt Conference schools, only .319 percentage points behind Georgia State, who placed 16th on the list with a 3.63 team GPA.
This past spring, South Alabama finished conference play with 16 victories and earned the second seed in the Sun Belt Conference Championship.
