5/18/2022 4:34:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women's basketball Terry Fowler announced on Wednesday that Michiyah Simmons and Naomi Smitherman have signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the program in the fall.

Simmons is from Blanche Ely High School where she averaged 14.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game during her senior season. Her performance landed her on the Broward 7A-6A girls' basketball first team. Additionally, she led her team to the Class 6A regional finals as a point guard. Simmons was also named to the 2021 Nike Tournament of Champions All-Tournament team in the Joe Smith Division.

"Michiyah is a high-level player with incredible talent and personality," head coach Terry Fowler said. "Her ability to score on three levels, play with pace and defend make her a perfect fit."

Smitherman, a Birmingham, Ala. native, served as the team captain at Ramsay High School for two years. She was selected for the 2021-22 all area team as well as the Birmingham Jefferson County all-star team.

"Naomi is a versatile athlete with a high ceiling," Fowler said. "She will rebound out of the area, score on the perimeter and defend. Her team-first mindset, competitive spirit and joyful personality make her a great addition to the team."
