LEGGETT, WASHINGTON SIGN WITH USA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

4/14/2022 11:44:00 AM

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women's basketball Terry Fowler announced on Thursday that Rachel Leggett and Tristen Washington have signed a National Letter-of-Intent and will join the program in the fall.

Leggett is coming from Navarre High School where she averaged 18.9 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.3 steals as a senior. Throughout her high school career, the 5-10 forward accumulated over 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and nearly 300 steals. Her performance landed her on teams such as the second team all-area as a sophomore and first team all-area as a junior and senior. Leggett was selected as Pensacola's player of the year two years running as well. She also aided the Raiders in capturing back-to-back District 1-6A championships, for the first time in program history, advancing the team to regionals.

"Rachel's versatility, athleticism and ability to score off the bounce and rebound makes her the perfect fit here," head coach Terry Fowler said. "She has a high ceiling and we believe her best basketball is ahead of her. She competes, loves the game and plays with energy."

Washington joins from Pearl River Community College where she played 27 games, starting in 14 contests, in just one season. The 5-6 guard averaged over 10 points and two rebounds a game for the Lady Wildcats. On three occasions Washington recorded 20 or more points with the last time allowing her to earn player of the week honors for the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges.

Before her arrival at PRCC, the Gonzales, La. native spent her freshman season at Northwestern State where she recorded 56 assists on the season, the second most of any on the squad.

"Tristen's ability to score on three levels, compete with the best, and keep her teammates involved makes her the complete player here," Fowler said. "She loves to shoot the three and so do we. Tristen's high character and work ethic will take her far on and off the court."
