NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama women's golfer Siti Shaari was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Week, as announced by the league office on Friday.
Shaari (73-72-70) earned medalist honors at the Tchefuncta Invitational at Tchefuncta Country Club in Covington, La., Feb. 21-22 with a 3-over par total of 216 after winning a six-hole playoff at TCC's 18th hole. She ranked second among the field in par-four scoring with a 1-over par average of 4.03, and ranked tied for fourth in birdies (8) for the tournament.
It marked the first time this season a Jaguar has been voted the SBC Women's Golfer of the Week, and the first time since Oct. 31, 2020, that Shaari earned the honor. In five events this season, Shaari has posted a team-best 72.53 stroke average, and has finished in the top 10 four times. Her win at Tchefuncta CC marked the first event this season she has earned medalist honors.
"Siti played great at Tchefuncta (Invitational)," USA head coach Matt Luther said. "She birdied 17 to get into a playoff, and was making putts to keep the playoff going. She got in trouble on the first hole and managed her way out, and then was just solid from there. She got a couple of bad breaks actually in the playoff, and just managed it and that is what experienced players are supposed to do. She should be winning this award each week as far as I'm concerned; she's as talented as they come, and I am frankly surprised when she's not winning tournaments. She definitely putted better this past week. If she keeps finding little bits of improvement to make, she's just going to keep getting better."
