South Alabama XC’s Flanagan earns at-large bid to NCAA Championships

MOBILE, Ala. | After recording a 10th-place performance earlier this weekend at the NCAA South Regional, South Alabama cross country runner Teagan Flanagan received an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships.

Flanagan, along with teammate Kirami Yego who tied for third at the regional, will now compete at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will take place at The Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday. The men's 10K race will begin at 10:10 a.m. (CT) and will be carried live on ESPNU.

The appearance at the championship meet marks the first of Flanagan's Jaguar career, Yego is making his second-straight at the postseason event.

The dual selections to the NCAA Championships mark the first for the program since the 2009 season – Zach Edwards and Micah Triop. It is also just the fourth time in program history in which South Alabama has had multiple runners advance to the championship event in the same season.

Flanagan set a new personal-best time of 29:48.90, the eighth-fastest 10K time at the regional. He has finished inside the top 10 in each of his four races this fall and six times over the past two seasons.

Yego's time of 29:28.70 marked a new personal best in the distance as well and was the fifth-fastest 10K time in program history. The redshirt-sophomore has now finished third or better in all four of his races this season. With his third-place finish, he has recorded 11 Top-10 finishes during his career, 10 of which have been in the top 5.

Thirty-one teams were selected to participate in the championship. The top-two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the nine regions, for a total of 18 teams. Thirteen additional teams were selected at-large.

Thirty-eight individuals were selected to participate in the championship through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process. All individual qualifiers finished in the top 25 in their respective regions.
