Yego wins second straight individual title and sets records; Flanagan and Magaud earn all-SBC honors for Jag XC

FOLEY, Ala. | South Alabama men's runner Kirami Yego won his second straight individual title, while Teagan Flanagan (first team) and Adele Magaud (second team) also earned all-conference honors Friday afternoon at the Sun Belt Cross Country Championships held at the Graham Creek Nature Preserve .
 
Yego crossed the line in the men's 8k in 22:55.9, a new Sun Belt Conference Championship meet record in the 8k, besting the previous record set by Nicholas Aliwell (23:25.48) of Western Kentucky in 1996, the first year the competition ran the 8k. Yego's time is also a new school record in the distance, eclipsing Vincent Rono's time of 23:05 set in 2006.
 
Flanagan placed second with a time of 23:38, while  Amos Pkemoi and Giacomo DeLuca II finished in the top-20 as well with times of 25:18.5 and 25:20.3, respectively. DeLuca's time was a personal best this season. 
 
The Jag women were paced by Magaud who crossed the line with a time of 17:38 to finish 10th.
 
South Alabama's men's team finished third with 58 points, marking the second-straight year the Jaguars have placed third at the conference championships, while the women finished seventh.

Post-Race Notes
  • Yego ran the first ever sub-23-minute 8k race in Jaguars history
  • Yego became the first runner in South Alabama history to be named first-team all-conference three separate times, since the conference began separating the all-conference teams in 2012.
  • Yego was the first repeat individual conference champion for South Alabama since Micha Tirop (07-08), and the first league runner to do so since Coastal Carolina's Nadeel Wildschutt, who won the title in 2017, '18 and '19
  • With the repeat performance, Yego becomes the seventh male runner to win multiple Sun Belt individual titles
  • Yego's time was 56 seconds faster than his winning effort in last year's championship race (23:51.3)
  • South Alabama still holds the most Sun Belt team titles among current conference members with nine.
  • This is the second straight year the men's team has finished third.
  • This is the third time the men's team has had two runners, earn first-team all-conference honors in the same season wince 2014 and '15 when 
  • Yego has finished first or second in all four of his races this season
  • Flanagan's time was the fifth-fastest time for the team this season at the 8k distance
  • Magaud's time was the third fastest of the season for her and for South Alabama
  • The women's team has placed in the top-10 at the Sun Belt Championship for 15 straight years, dating back to 2008. In that timeframe, they have not finished below seventh
  • The second-team honor marks Magaud's second all-conference accolade, as she earned first-team honors last fall
  • Tonsberg set a new personal best by seven seconds
  • Chagot also set a new personal best in the 5k, besting her previous best of 18:52 set at the Joe Piane Invitational earlier this season
