Jaguar Cross Country to take part in Sun Belt Conference Championship

MOBILE, Ala. | The South Alabama men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Friday at the Graham Creek Nature Preserve in Foley, Ala. The women's 5k will start at 4:02 p.m., with the men's 8k scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The meet was origninally scheduled for Saturday, but was moved up a day due to forecasted inclement weather.

Pre-Race Notes
  • Friday marks the first time the Sun Belt Championship will be held in Foley, Ala.
  • This fall's meet is also the 38th running of the SBC Cross Country Championship on the women's sided and the 45th on the men's side
  • Yego – who captured the individual title last fall – has already posted a personal-best time of  23:25 in the 8k this fall, which would tie the conference championship record set by Western Kentucky's Nicholas Aliwell in 1996
  • Yego has earned first-team all-SBC honors at the meet at the last two championships
  • There have been nine different male Jaguar runners to win the Sun Belt individual title: Yego (2021), Zac Edwards (2009), Micah Tirop (2008 and '07), Vincent Rono (2006 and '05), Tonny Okello (2004), David Kamani (1999) and Bobby Abruscato (1981)
  • For the women, four individuals have become Sun Belt champions: Carolien Millenaar (2020), Laura Labuschaigne (2017), Laura Martin (1997) and DeAnne Dahmar (1987).
  • South's men's team is currently ranked 12th in the South Region of the USTFCCCA
  • The Jaguar men's team will be looking for its 10th team title and second in the last three years as they won the 2020 meet
  • The women are in search of their fifth team title and first since 2015
  • Magaud earned first-team all-conference honors at last season's meet where she finished fourth with a time of 17:38
  • The South women have now had at least one runner earn first-team honors each of the last seven seasons and nine of the last 10 dating back to the 2012 meet when first-team honors were first recognized
  • The USA women have had a runner finish inside the top 15 at the meet each season dating back to 2008
