South Alabama owns a 14-4 all-time lead over Texas State in a series that began in 2014. USA has never lost a three-game series to Texas State. The Jags took two of three games from the Bobcats in 2019 at Stanky Field, which marked the last meeting between the schools. South Alabama is 7-2 all-time in San Marcos, Texas, and has won six of the last seven games at Texas State dating back to 2014.
CALVI ECLIPSES 300 CAREER WINS
Jaguar head coach Mark Calvi earned his 300th career win in game two of the Georgia State series on April 25 at Stanky Field. Calvi enters the weekend with 302 career wins, all of which have come at South Alabama.Â
JAGS IN TOP 5 NATIONALLY IN SACRIFICE BUNTS
South Alabama enters the weekend ranked fourth nationally and second in the Sun Belt in sacrifice bunts with 39. Kaleb DeLaTorre leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks third in the nation with 10 sacrifice bunts.
JAGUAR PITCHING STAFF IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Jaguar pitching staff ranks 16th nationally in WHIP (1.21), 23rd in hits allowed per nine innings (7.53) and 26th in ERA (3.69) - all of which lead the Sun Belt Conference.
JAGS SNAP HOMERLESS STREAK
Center fielder Michael Sandle's two home runs in the series opener at Georgia Southern on April 30 snapped a seven-game homerless drought for South Alabama, which dated back to the series opener with Louisiana on April 18. Prior to the UL series opener, the Jags had homered in five straight contests.
MONTIEL ECLIPSES 100 CAREER HITS
Jaguar shortstop Santi Montiel recorded his 100th career hit at South Alabama in last weekend's series at Georgia Southern. Montiel's 100th career hit came in the form of a double in the top of the third inning of the series opener with the Eagles.
JAGS WHEN OUTHITTING THE OPPOSITION
South Alabama is 15-0 when outhitting the opposition this season, 5-10 when getting outhit and 5-5 when hits are tied.Â
JAG DEFENSE LEADS SBC
South Alabama leads the Sun Belt Conference in fielding percentage (.976) entering the weekend. The Jags committed one error in last weekend's three-game series at Georgia Southern, which came in game two of the series.
SANDLE DURING HIT STREAK
Center fielder Michael Sandle carries a nine-game hitting streak into the series opener. Sandle is batting .410 with one double, two home runs, 14 RBIs, nine runs scored, four stolen bases and .429 on-base percentage during that stretch, and has recorded multiple hits in six of nine games. Sandle finished with a career-high eight RBIs in last weekend's series opener at Georgia Southern, which was one RBI shy of tying the program's single-game record of nine.Â
DELATORRE, BOOKER CAREER VERSUS TEXAS STATE
In three career games, first baseman Kaleb DeLaTorre is batting .455 (5-for-11) with one double, one triple, one home run, four RBIs, three runs scored, 1.000 slugging percentage and .538 on-base percentage. In two career appearances, one of which was a start, right-hander JoJo Booker is 1-0 with a 0.87 ERA with 10 strikeouts against four walks in 10 1/3 innings pitched against the Bobcats.
WILSON DURING HIT STREAK
Left fielder Ethan Wilson is batting .407 (11-for-27) with one double, one home run, five RBIs, seven runs scored, four stolen bases and a .515 on-base percentage during his current seven-game hitting streak. Wilson has recorded multiple hits in three contests during that span, including consecutive games with multiple hits to close out last weekend's series at Georgia Southern. Wilson ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference in OBP (.444) entering Friday's series opener.
SMITH LEADS SBC IN 2 CATEGORIES
Right-hander Miles Smith leads the SBC in ERA (1.85), which ranks 24th nationally, and fewest earned runs allowed (9) entering the weekend. Smith ranks second in the league in fewest runs allowed (12), and ninth in opposing batting average (.217).
MONTIEL DURING ON-BASE STREAK
Shortstop Santi Montiel is batting .419 with five doubles, seven RBIs, eight runs scored, .581 slugging percentage and .486 on-base percentage during his current nine-game on-base streak. Montiel has hit safely in seven of nine contests during that stretch with multiple hits in four games, including tying his career high with three hits in the series finale at Georgia Southern last weekend.Â
SAMANIEGO AMONG SBC SAVES LEADERS
Jaguar left-hander Tyler Samaniego ranks tied for second in the Sun Belt Conference in saves (6) entering the weekend. Since allowing a season-high five runs in the series finale at Little Rock on April 11, Samaniego has posted three straight scoreless relief appearances and recorded one save in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Samaniego has allowed earned runs in just two of his 14 appearances this season.
JAGS ON THE ROAD
South Alabama is batting .227 in 19 road games this season, while the pitching staff has recorded a 4.88 ERA in 164 innings pitched. The Jags are 10-9 in road games entering the weekend.Â
LEHRMANN LEADS LEAGUE IN HITS ALLOWED
Left-hander Tyler Lehrmann leads the Sun Belt Conference in fewest hits allowed (29), and ranks fourth in opposing batting average (.190). Lehrmann has allowed 12 hits in his last four appearances, which spans 17 innings and includes two starts. Lehrmann has also allowed just one run in his last three appearances and struck out 14 batters against two walks, which covers 15 1/3 innings pitched. The southpaw has not allowed more than five hits in any appearance this season.
JAGS ALLOW SEASON HIGH IN HITS
South Alabama allowed a season-high 16 hits in game two of last weekend's series at Georgia Southern. The Eagles recorded 11 or more hits in each game of the series, which marks just the second series this season USA has allowed 10 or more hits in each game of the three-game set. Jacksonville State recorded 10 or more hits in every game of its series with South Alabama this season at Stanky Field on March 12-14. Georgia Southern's 11 runs in game two also tied the Jags' season high of runs allowed.
JAGUAR WIN STREAK SNAPPED AT 9 GAMES
South Alabama had its season-best nine-game win streak snapped in game two of last weekend's series at Georgia Southern. During its nine-game streak, USA posted a 1.44 team ERA with four saves and two shutouts, 92 strikeouts and 20 walks in 81 innings pitched while limiting the opposition to a .203 batting average. The Jags batted .246 with 11 doubles, three home runs, 45 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 16 stolen bases during their win streak, while the defense recorded a .984 fielding percentage. USA's nine-game streak marked the longest Jaguar win streak since winning nine straight contests from Feb. 15-24, 2013.
ALLOWING FIVE OR LESS
South Alabama is 24-4 this season when allowing five runs or less, but is 1-11 when opponents score six or more.Â
WILSON NAMED TO GOLDEN SPIKES AWARD WATCH LIST
Ethan Wilson was selected to the 2021 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, marking the second straight season he has been named to the list.Â
WILSON NAMED PRESEASON SBC PLAYER OF THE YEAR, ALL-AMERICA
Ethan Wilson was named the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year, marking the second straight season he was voted the league's top player in preseason voting. Wilson was also named Baseball America First-Team Preseason All-America, and Third-Team Preseason All-America by D1Baseball.
