MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women's basketball Terry Fowler announced Friday that Kiana Anderson has signed a grant-in-aid with the school and is set to join the program this fall.
Anderson comes to the university after spending one season at Trinity Valley (Texas) C.C. and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
"I'm excited to have Kiana join our program," Fowler said. "She brings experience of playing at a high level having just competed in the NJCAA national championship game. She plays physically with toughness and is a good rebounder, which translates at any level."
In her lone year at TVCC, Anderson averaged 7.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per outing while posting 18 steals, 12 assists and 12 blocked shots to help the Lady Cardinals finish 22-3 overall after earning the No. 2 seed at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Tournament and advancing to the championship game of the event. She recorded five double-doubles during the 2021 campaign, with highlights including finishing with 26 points — her highest total of the year — and 15 rebounds in a victory at Coastal Bend (Texas) C.C., and 22 points and a season-best 18 boards in a road win over Bossier Parish (La.) C.C.
Anderson collected 18 points and 38 rebounds in 19 contests at Little Rock in 2019-20, also contributing seven steals while averaging nearly seven minutes per outing. She had a season-high six points at Florida Atlantic while in her only start of the year she pulled down a season-best seven rebounds at No. 15 Mississippi State.
During her time at Warren Easton Charter High in New Orleans, La., Anderson helped the Eagles to three straight district titles and back-to-back state 4A championships as she was named most valuable player of the final game her junior year. She posted averages of 10.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest that season as the Eagles recorded a 29-11 overall mark, earning first-team all-metro honors from the New Orleans Advocate, while she missed most of her senior year when the team finished 29-5 due to an injury suffered the previous summer.
The Jags' 2021-22 recruiting class now includes 11 individuals. High school seniors Emani Burks (Melbourne, Fla.), Trinity Garrett (Spring Branch, Texas), Nadia Howard (Grayson, Ga.), Debbie Reese (Fort Pierce, Fla.), Jordan Rosier (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Tyrielle Williams (New Orleans, La.) all signed National Letters-of-Intent in the fall, while since the end of the season South has signed four other transfers — Zena Elias (Clearwater, Fla./Buffalo), Destiny Haymer (Tchula, Miss./Cincinnati), Jaylin Powell (Raleigh, N.C./Elon) and Destiny Samuel (Queens, N.Y/Binghamton) — to grants-in-aid.
The Jaguars have finished with an overall record of .500 or better each of the last four seasons after going 13-13 last year, which included a win in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
