USA MEN’S TENNIS EVRARD FALLS IN ROUND 64 OF NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

5/23/2021 9:23:00 PM

ORLANDO – The University of South Alabama's Julien Evrard fell 6-4, 6-4 against No. 41 Martim Prata of No.3 Tennessee in round 64 of the NCAA Division I Singles Championship on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

Volunteer Prata got the ball rolling early, as he won the opening set against Jaguar Evrard, but Evrard was not going to make things easy for Prata in the next set. The Lille, France, native was in dead heat against Tennessee's Prata in the second set as the score was tied 4-4, but that was as far as Evrard would get. Prata later secured his victory with the 6-4, 6-4 win to end the day.

"It was a very tough match. Prata is a great accomplished player who is consistent," said Brochu. "I believe he made two mistakes the entire match, but that was the game plan. Julien [Evrard] had to be on the offense, and he had to keep the pressure on Prata. In the end, he played a poor game which caused him to break, and sometimes that's the difference between winning or losing when players are that steady. His opponent stayed in and rolled balls back in until he was able to cause a mistake. Julien went a little too big, but it was a very tough matchup. Everything else was top level and as we wanted. He was aggressive and hitting and serving the ball well. Being 4-4 against a great player like this proved him to be a great representative of South Alabama."

Evrard, ranked No. 80 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, closed out the season with an overall 19-9 singles record.

"He accomplished a lot this season, and he earned his spot at the national championship with the top 64 players in the country," said Brochu. "He fought so hard, and I am very proud of him. I know it's hard for him to swallow this very close loss because he was fully capable of upsetting his opponent. He has to look at the bright side because he's had such a great season at South Alabama."
